Accord 2.2 cdti
Discussion
I wouldn't be as confident with this engine as I would be petrol Hondas.
When the 2.2 came out, Honda technicians were not as experienced as other manufacturers' at dealing with modern diesels. Many of the diesels were fleet fodder and were treated like fleet fodder, where most Hondas in the past have been owned privately by people doing lower miles and caring more for their cars. Like a lot of modern diesels, any abuse or lack of care can lead to big bills.
In my opinion, unless you're doing large miles, I'd avoid the diesel and go for the petrol instead. With the advent of the diesel, the petrol versions have taken a residual hit and the higher spec Executive models are complete bargains.
A 2.4 Executive Manual, assuming you could find one, is a lot of car for the money.

www.civinfo.com has a lot of information on that engine (in civics though). They moan quite a not about minor issues but I was convinced enough to buy a 2.2 civic. 1500 miles and no problems so far!!!
I've had two, an 04 and and currently an 06 and neither have needed oil between services...
As previously said, I don't think this engine will prove as reliable as their petrols, but it is their first attempt.
Watch out for exhaust fumes in the cabin caused by a cracked exhaust manifold at ~100k. Known problem and Honda have increased the 3y/90k warranty on this part to 7y/125k IIRC.
See also http://www.thaoc.co.uk/ (The Honda Accord Owners Club) Less whinging about petty faults than Civinfo....

You are right that Civinfo members moan about the most minor of niggles and they seem very willing to make significant electronic modifications to cars under warranty but there is a lot of really, really useful stuff on the site. You just need to be careful as you do with any forum. As previously said, I don't think this engine will prove as reliable as their petrols, but it is their first attempt.

Hello,
first post...
I changed to a Accord exec i-CTDi saloon from a 2001 Accord 2.0SE vtec a little while ago. I've got 60K up and found no oil consumption issues. I'm returning around 45mpg on mixed driving (daily commute = 10 miles town & expressway).
My driving changed has changed from the petrol, peak torque is around 2000rpm, red line is 4500 but it pulls firmly between 2500 & 4000, 70mph = 1900rpm I can't make my mind up on the VSA system though.
There have been reports of exhaust manifolds cracking, leading to a smell of fumes inside, Honda have extended the warranty period on this, I'm lead to believe.
I did have a concern about a noise which seemed like a pulley fault, to reassure me the dealer started all his stock of similar cars and they all sounded the same.. I'll keep my ear on that.
I recommend www.thaoc.co.uk though.
