Posted this in General Gassing too... I am currently considering one of these as my next car, as the STi is a bit too heavy on juice / too much of a danger to my licence for daily use, and the current runabout (1.5 carb'd CRX) isn't exactly a paradigm of fuel efficiency itself. I know there were some revisions made to the DC2 range in 98 (e.g. larger brake discs, 5 stud wheels with larger tyres etc.) and was wondering if there is any tangible difference between the two (i.e these and pre-98 cars)? Cheers.

I assume you're talking about the differances between the 96 and 98 spec JDM cars here. Yes as well as the 16" wheels and brake upgrade there were suspension tweeks with beefed anti roll bars, ABS was made std as i think HID lights were too. 98 spec also gain a stainless steel manifold which was freer breathing and is a popular mod to the uk cars. 96 spec cars were also slightly lighter, about 20kg i think so not much. As far as i've heard there's not much in them as far as actually driving them concerned though.

If you want a factory parts only car go with the 98JDM, the best performance package of all the OEM versions.

Cheers guys. Had a run in a Clio 172 earlier (for sake of comparison) but I just couldn't get comfortable with the driving position. Looks like it's going to be a DC2 aferall.

roflrofl

Immense compared to your little pushbike maybe, or your Dad's repmobile, but in absolute stats they're nothing special anymore...and I've owned two and driven a lot of other stuff besides!

You need to get out more kid. Go and play with your friends in the park or something, but don't hang around a grown-ups forum pretending...it just makes you look even sadder than you are!

To a lot of my friends my ITR is very fast, but I'd describe it as adequate!

For what they are, the power they have is crazy.

And whats your problem?

Some kid who knows jack about cars coming on here and spouting off a load of bks.

Next question - and you can make them a bit harder you know - some of us actually use our brains!

Making 187hp from a n/a 1800cc is still quite impressive, I'll give him that. But straight stats for these cars are nothing to brag about these days. However, throw some bends in and they can still hold their heads proud imo...

Which was exactly what I was saying.

And some people I know are pushing out 220bhp from a NASP 1.8.

And then some, I've heard of nearer 250 claimed from some teg boys... no idea how true that is mind. 220 is probably more realistic.

Exactly for what they are (NASP 1.8) they are alot of fun.

And that was 220bhp from a standard JDM B18C lump.

No cams or anything like that,

Just NASP.

The DC2 is not about power, although it has enough. It's about handling, feel and grip. It might not be the fastest in a straight line, but it'll keep up with most things on a track day.

Which is exactly why I bought #2 - not because of the power (it feels a little light vs even the S2000, let alone other stuff I tried like the STi), but because of the chassis, the steering, the overall package.

I just found someone claiming "the power is immense" to be really amusing given that even Corsa's now kick-out about the same...

Yep, although not about straight line speed, even today its no slouch to be fair. Remember we are talking about a car first released back in 1996? 12 years old, and with just a 1.8 engine manages 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and 145 mph. Compared to the hot hatches of its day it would have been highly impressive, and even today it can pretty much match your standard Focus ST's and the like.

Granted in this day of every motor being chipped, it would lose out, but then I wonder how long many of these chipped cars would last if they were constantly revved like you can do to a VTEC engine. How many of them on their standard components would get heatsoak etc...

However the important thing is that teg IMO feels fast. Not fast as in the shove you get from a turbo, but fast enough when the VTEC kicks in, feeling the tyres just about retaining their grip on the tarmac, the sensation of speed that results from having such a firm, light chassis and lack of soundproofing, and overlaid with a soundtrack that simply puts any modern hot hatch rival to shame.

They are great cars, and who cares what might be faster? The magic of the teg is just how suited the chassis and handling is to the power. Its just right. Some people turbo them but then i sometimes think thats missing the point of these cars a bit, because they would then just become yet another wheelspinning mess of a car, you might as well just buy a turbo'd car to begin with.

Agreed.

Guys - you know me - I'm not knocking the car, I'm just trying to point out the gaping inaccuracy in that post.

We don't need to keep going on about how great it is...if people get it, fine. If people don't, also fine. If fanboys like our new friend want to prattle on about them like they're the second coming, it'd be nice if they could get their facts straight first...
