I have a 2004 Honda Accord 2.2 CTDI , whilst driving it last night the car lost its power and the oil light came on , I checked the oil on the dipstick and it was okay and I was only a mile away from home so I drove it home slowly , the car seems like its only running on 3 cylinders and struggles to rev past 2k revs. There are no knocking or banging noises coming from the engine , I checked the water level and it had also lost alot of water. The car still starts buts the oil light is constantly on now , im going to have it towed into a garage at the end of the week. Is this a common thing on these engines , I thought they where bulletproof , my car has just done 100k miles and has full Honda service history , as anyone else on here experienced this and what was the full outcome and cost to have it repaired.

sounds like it's gone into limp mode. do a quick search should help. normally caused by fuel contamination, airflow sensors faulty, blocked air/oil filter etc.

I had a similar problem when I inherited a similar Accord diesel a couple of years ago.

The symptoms were the same- very, very limited revs and power and the management light. Turned out the the muppets who'd done the previous service had fitted a fuel filter the wrong way around, apparantly.

Your car is only just out of warranty and Honda have a pretty good record on goodwill.

There was a poster on HonestJohn not too long ago with a CRV that threw a rod at almost 5yrs and his last service was at an independant. Honda paid the vast majority of the cost of a new engine.

Would this kind of fault make the oil light constantly stay on though , the engine warning light is not on

possibly if it related to a blockage... tough to know, you need a honda mechanic or someone who knows this engine inside out to appear on the board - good luck

I know it's not a Honda, but my Volvo had very similar issues when the turbo inlet hose became disconnected. Just a thought.

I've read in alot of places that the i-CTDi engine uses alot of oil, could it be it's ran a little too low on the black stuff?

You could ask the people at The Honda Accord Owner's Club http://www.thaoc.co.uk/ but the hosting site's down at the moment.

There's also the Civic forum at http://www.civinfo.com/ plenty of i-CTDi owners there.

You say you've lost water, any signs of it on the dipstick?

If you're not hearing any obvious signs of oil starvation it could just be the pressure sensor. That might have put the ECU into limp home mode and that would explain the lack of revs/power.

The other common reason for limp-home mode is a blocked fuel filter. It's a bugger to get at and there have been reports of garages not bothering to change it (causes 'Low pressure in common-rail' errors).

I keep reading that, but I've had two and they both used hardly any....

Bad news , the engine has an hole in the front just above the sump , looks like its either broke a con rod or the bearings have worn , the car is in a local engine reconditioner. Ive tried to locate an engine from a breakers today but ive had no luck and the best price for a recon engine is about £3500 frown

Sorry to hear the news.. as for the 'my car has just done 100k miles and has full Honda service history' my experience with Honda doesn't mean a thing.. My local dealer has fobbed me a number of times until I have had to contact Honda UK to sort the problems out.. Half the time with Honda they take the reliability in hand so you pay for a mechanic to look at it rather than service it.. I've experienced this for paying a Honda to check and adjust the valve clearances, 4 wheel geometry set up, check and clean the brakes, etc, makes you wonder why the servicing is so cheap... This is my personal experience and in future, will ensure that the service items are marked prior to the service recieved.
