NÜRBURG, Germany — The latest prototype of the 2011 Acura NSX has hit the Nürburgring, and according to our sources in Japan, it has a very specific goal. We're told that Takeo Fukui, CEO of Honda, has tasked his R&D team with building an NSX that's faster around the Nürburgring than both the Nissan GT-R and the upcoming Lexus LF-A.

It's a tall order, and one that Honda hopes it can achieve through the use of a 5.5-liter V10 expected to make 550 horses, with a torque peak expected to top 420 pound-feet. The engine is essentially a slightly larger version of the V8 that Honda will use for the next-generation, rear-wheel-drive RL sedan, and it will use cylinder deactivation under light loads for maximum efficiency. Additional gains will come from the use of an eight-speed, paddle-shifted automatic.

Getting the power to the ground will be a modified version of Honda's Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system. Packaging could be tight, however, as this NSX will place its V10 up front. A combination of steel and aluminum will be used for the chassis that will form the basis of this 2+2 sports car.

Is it a mid engined, 2 seater 2WD sports car? No, no and no. Who is going to buy one?

Looking at the shape, I'd expect it to be wider then it looks, especially with a V10 in the front.

People need to obsessing about 'ring laptimes and focus on making a car that's good to drive.

Please Honda... do a 2+2-2.... and put the engine where it should be, behind the seats!

I would love to see them do something a little more hardcore but it looks like they are going down the GT route.

Agreed, that's a GT.

Please let it be mid engined, two seats, with the delicacy to entertain Ferrari R & D a la NSX.

Frankly who gives a toss about its 'ring lap time. Looks like a bag of ste to me!
No self respecting NSX owner would be seen dead in that chav mobile. Reminds me of that Lexus abortion I forget the name of, or maybe Toyota Supra c.1993. You might get a few lard arsed yanks to buy one I suppose.

Honda NSX - R.I.P!

I could be wrong, but that looks a lot like a 350Z to me and Nissan are currently working on a new Z, so all is not lost!!
There have been a few drawings on the net recently, supposedly of the new NSX and they looked nothing like that but much more similar to the "old" design, which I hope they stick to. Fingers crossed.......

Oh no! What have they done! It's so far away from the NSX it's silly.

Looks like a CRX that has crashed into an RX8!

Why? Isn't what it is and how it drives more important than how quick it is around the 'ring?

The same group of people who buy 911's in thier thousands I would guess. There is no real alternative to a 911 right now, Fezzers are too expensive, Audi TT's aren't anywhere close, so I think they are pretty smart to target this market - maybe too many 2 seater mid-engined cars to complete against?

I don't think so. Look how many current NSX owners would consider getting one.
