First thing is oil pressure - have you checked your oil levels recently? Could also be the VTEC soleniod needs cleaning.

Cars in limp mode? The ECU may have put it there for one reason or another to stop you damaging the engine.

ECU thinks there is something wrong with the engine and it wont let you rev above a certain limit

I've got a catback and no issue at all with vtecing.

You won't be able to vtec when cold. Not sensible to do so anyway. I guess the ecu takes certain sensor readings before allowing the vtec to kick in...

In the case above something's wrong and it needs to be plugged into a diagnostic machine. Maybe something like a faultly sensor. The ecu is just protecting the engine from damage.

I believe there is a diagnostic plug near the ecu and if you put a paper clip into two of the pins (forget which one's). This will make the engine light flash in a certain sequence (short and long flashes). Depending on what sequence these flashes go in - it will tell you what problem your car has.

Just googling quickly came up with this. Have more of a dig and i'm sure you will find out what is wrong (most common thing is the 02 sensor) http://www.civinfo.com/forum/how/7044-read-clear-d...

yes, I mean though, if I put on a cat back alongside my aem v2 air kit, then my car will run lean

will I need a new ecu

or should I de-cat/manifold...

No it won't run lean with a cat back and V2, change the manifold at the same time it might run a little lean, go for a kpro ecu and then you can chnge the map for one a lot better with a lower vtec change and higher rev limit

Got a cat back and aem cai on mine and no issues with it running lean. Have heard that the kpro is very good to have though. It releases a few additional ponies and apparently gives slightly better mpg.

Might be an idea to get yourself over onto the CTR owners club forum. Lots of valuable information on there for you.
