Civic 1.8 VTI-S

Hey everyone,
Right basically i had an idea of getting a Toyota GT4 ST185, but have since abandoned the idea and fancy something that still has a fair bit of punch but is reliable and a lil' more practical. So i've started thinking about the Civic 1.8 VTI or VTI-S, basically 'coz my brother had the normal VTI. Is there any massive difference between the 2 models, or is it purely cosmetic? Also does anyoe know how Type R bits will switch over from Integra's and the EK-9 Civics?
I was just after general opinions aswell on what these cars are like, as unfortunately my bro never had his long because the previous owner had fallen out with someone big time, and thinking that the previous owner still owned the car, the angered man decided to torch it =( so if anyone says "it's a 1 out of 500 car" its now a "1 out of 499" or much less i imagine.
Any comments would be helpful as i need to shift my piece of poo 306 and move on up.

The S is cosmetic changes only, which I think make it look worse.
As Barry said the basic engine is the same as a DC2 Interga, the Interag is hand finished, and rusns a more aggressive management system and different cam profiles.
I *think* the suspension is the same layout as well, so it could be possible to build a 5 door Civic VTi out of an Interga and a Civic.

cool, i didn't know that it was pretty much the same as the integra. So basically, a lightened and slightly uprated Civic VTI could have a similar sort of performance as the Type R Integra! And considering the insurance will be just a smidge over £600 for me being 20 with 3 ync, i'd say thats a pretty good base for a jap performance car!
Cheers guys, also, not sure if any of you are from round south (Andover/Salisbury area) but does anyone know any reputable modshops or body shops? As i love my cars but am still pretty basic with mechanics etc, so would be good to know of some quality re-trim places and possibly body shops.

Matching the straight line pace of a teg shouldn't be too tricky, within reason, but I doubt the 5dr shell is as stiff as the TypeR so you'd have to go some to get it handling as tightly. That said, you could get very near to the on road performance with a few choice mods I suppose. And it'd be quite the sleeper too of course
I used to have a VTi-S.. very enjoyable cars to drive.
The best mod to do to these cars is fit the S90 UK Integra Gearbox to it.. Makes the car much more livelier to drive. Theres a clip on youtube of a standard MB6 VTI beating a S2000 on a strip with only this gearbox and a different exhaust and air filter if i remember correctly

get the estate for proper q-carness
my old one had basic mods - kyb shocks, platimex springs, Rover ZS rear A-R bar, supersprint manifold de-cat and cat-back, intake resonator removed, and most importantly the late DC2 ITR gearbox conversion (S80 with shorter FD).
with crap front tyres on it still went alright at Donny - i'm the silver wagon to the left a the start:

i believe is DC2 was pretty std at the time, for comparison's sake
i did also go to pod once (not what i usually do to cars), where it ran a 15.4 and was a car's length behind the DC2 i was up against.
without the gearbox they're annoyingly long geared though

I went from a '97 VTi to an '00 DC2. And they're totally different, trust me. You could probably make a VTi perform broadly like a DC2 by spending a fair bit of money on the engine*, 'box, brakes and suspension. But it won't feel like one:-
- Steering is the biggest weakness on the VTi, and the hardest to sort-out.
- Seats / height - Recaro's are lovely! And you sit properly low in the DC2.
IMHO for the money you'd spend sorting a VTi to go like a DC2, you could buy a decent DC2. And a heavily modified Civic will cost more to insure than a stock DC2.

Totally agree, owner a dc2 and i've driven a vti, the teg is a different beast all together, don't for one second thing with afew mods you can live with a dc2.- Steering is the biggest weakness on the VTi, and the hardest to sort-out.

DC2's would blow a 5 door VTI out of the water anyday!
My mate has a VTI hatch with an aerodeck engine in it and has done masses os suspension and handling work and the DC2's at japdest were still beating him round coombe.
There wasnt much that could hang with some of the DC2's when i was down there - apart from that eviiiil starlet seemed to be killing pretty much everything! That was a true joy to see

there's not a huge difference in striaght line terms between a 1.8 vti with the right breathing mods and S80 box, and a DC2. like i say, i've done it, and the wagon weighs 70kg more than the hatch
steering feel though, and balance out of the box, the teg is light years ahead.
i prob spent >£1k on all my mods, and apart from the steering feel is (the vti is really woolly), she would still live with std DC2s on track, on more than one occasion.
you can buy a decent 1.8vti for a grand now, i don't think you'll get a tidy DC2 for 2k

Yeah I think it was. We had a chat to him after coming off track for the first time, he said the engine was pretty much standard but I spotted the semis and the cage Nice bloke!Btw I was in the silver 1.5 Civic - the slowest thing on the track in a straight line!

I have a Civic VTI-S and its amazing. I am looking for mod ideas.
I have a cat back exhaust and induction kit but would like more performance.
Have looked at Skunk Stage 2 cams and such like and noticed your mention of the integra s90 gear box.
If yous have any ideas let me know.
