Honda Civic - what type of engine?!

How would i know what age of honda civic has which type of engine?. . . .honda D and B series engine floats around alot.... i just dont a clue as to what it all means.

So since its confusing my poor ageing mind, could some one shed some light on this for me?

So for example: in a 2005 Honda Civic 1.6 v-tec Sport i would find a Honda [something] Series engine.....
