S2000 - Which One?
Discussion
I'm looking for an S2000 for SWMBO and have narrowed it down to the following few options:
1999, T-Reg, 77,000 miles, grey import (2001), aftermarket glass rear screen, £7695 ono
2001 grey import unregistered in UK (just arrived) Variable Gear Steering (VGS) Limited Edition, 21,000 miles £9450
I'm now arranging to view these but any input from PH'ers will be most welcome.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I know that are a couple of cars in the same kind of price range that you are looking for on here.

Thanks Andy,
I've had a good look but they're mostly out of our budget. Fantastic cars but sadly too expensive for us.
We went to see the T-reg import today, beautiful looking car and it drove well but it needed a lot of money spent to bring up to scratch
Hoping to go and see the 2001 VGS early this week. Looks promising....

Oh well, worth a try.
Let us all know how you get on with your next viewing.
Have you found any of the information on the website useful when you are viewing the cars?
You'll love driving the car when you finally get hold of one. I have had mine for almost 2 years now, and it is great fun to drive.
Cheers

We printed out the MarkB buying guide and took it with us. Very informative.
Is yours for sale on the S2k web-site? If so, which one is it?
Colin
Hi Colin,
How did you know my car was for sale?!?!
My car isn't for sale on s2ki, however it is on this site for sale. To save you guessing which one it is, here is the link.

I love it to bits, but because of the arrival of a new member of the family, I need something a little more family orientated.
It's the first rear wheel drive, and the first convertible I have owned, so for anyone out there that hasn't taken the leap, go for it!
Cheers

Hey Martin,
Why don't take a trip down to your local Honda dealer and have a try and see how you manage with getting in, and getting out? It will give you an idea on how you might get on with one on a regular basis.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Ah yes obviously Doh! Well it will be a while off yet ! By all accounts the VGS is an acquired taste, and wasn't a well-received option on the S2000. So I'd probably avoid that one.
That said, if your budget is that low a car fresh off the boat is probably a better bet vis-a-vis suspension adjustment bolts than a leggy UK car (or at least a non-owners-club car).

Yeh, we decided against that one in the end. I've got the wifes current car up for sale and once that goes we'll look to get a UK model rather than an import. That said, if your budget is that low a car fresh off the boat is probably a better bet vis-a-vis suspension adjustment bolts than a leggy UK car (or at least a non-owners-club car).
Just a thought, you do know that when a Jap import is registered in this country it is officially manufactured on that date. This means that the car will be subject to the new VED pricing so will cost you £400 a year to tax. I currently own an 06 car and i'm paying that amount because it was backdated to all cars manufactured after March 06. It's w*nk but hey i love cars!!
Just a word of warning before you got a shock.

If it's a UK car the glass rear screen would be a very useful option to have - either as a retrofit or as a standard '02 car.
But above all, general condition is critical - parts and repairs can be a lot more pricey than your average Honda, so buying the best car you can afford will probably save you cash long-term.

Hi all,
There's a 2002 UK model advertised for 10k. It has the glass rear screen and low mileage but it doen't have a full service history. The owner thinks the oil's been changed twice in the past four years but the car's only done 20,000 miles in that time.
It's had a recent bonnet respray and new brakes and pads.
How important is the full service history with these cars?
Thanks in advance.

I'd worry about that. They use quite a lot of oil, and even if a low-miler, if the owner hasn't been bothered enough to get it serviced every year I doubt they'd be the sort to check the oil-level...
Resprays aren't the end of the world though - the front gets a lot of stone chips and the sides are prone to parking dings...mine's had probably 2/3 of the panels done at some point or another in it's life and with one exception you can't really tell...
