Does anyone have any real world experience of the new Civic diesel ?

Test drive one yesterday (that only had 4 miles on the clock so probably not at its best) and it only managed 35mpg eek on a journey where my existing car (Golf TDi SE 105) would have achieved closer to 55mpg.

I know my Golf has less power but was expecting the Civic to get close to 50mpg - is this realistic ?

That's not right. My old man has the same engine in his Accord and gets way more than 35 in a bigger car. A bit too fresh that one I'd suggest... Might be worth trying one with a few more miles on.

If the car has only done 4 miles, the engine will be very tight.

The other thing is, how harsh was the car driven over those 4 miles? If it's a demonstrator it may have had the full bore treatment.

It still only got 35mpg as I reset the computer when I got in it - I would hope it would get much better than that - I know someone with the same engine in the Accord estate who's getting very close to 50mpg - must have been just bcos it was so new......

Yes definitely because it is so new, my colleague is getting 45mpg and his route to work includes a lot of urban driving, traffic lights and stop start traffic. On a longer run he is getting 50+.

You may also have to drive it differently because the Civic's power delivery is much smoother an less spikey than the Golf.

I've now done 51k in my 2006 2.2 diesel Civic. Overall average is around 49mpg and I can get 55mpg on a motorway run.

I'd guess that you could see 35mpg on a fairly short stop & start run combined with a heavy right foot.

Update, my colleagues average speed is less than 25 mph, so you can see, pretty urban!

Most diesels would be very tight at that time and need some time to loosen and come good.

I have driven his and I really liked it, so much so I have purchased one! Bit of a contrast to the Caterham, but actually a good car to go alongside it too.

Hi, I've had an 08 plate Civic 2.2cdti as a hire car all week with 11k miles on the clock, so how it's been driven in the past is anyone's guess.
Mainly used for commuting 20 miles a day on country lanes and a-roads, and for a motorway trip from Essex to Staffs yesterday. Average was 48mpg for the week and 55mpg for the motorway journey, at varying speeds of 60 - 90 units.
