It'll be an older one, £10k (ish), hopefully in Gray but i love yellow for some reason...

Why should I buy one? Are the gearboxes as notchy as ive been led to believe, do they feel like you are driving with an poorly oiled box? How do they cruise on the motorway if you were to do a long journey? What are they like on fuel? (not too important).

Why should i buy one?

I havent driven one yet and that is the next step obviously, but prior to that, why should i get one?

hehe, cheers guys.

Will get a nice one for 10k. Very well put together cars.
Gearbox can be notchy, I drove a few that were a bit and a few that weren't. Mine is ever so slightly notchy into 3rd but the box is still very sweet with a short throw. Best gearbox I have used I think. Definitely shouldn't feel like it's poorly oiled though!

Motorway cruising is fine. Any convertible will have wind noise, though I believe the hard top is much quieter if you are into that sort of thing. Comfortably cruises at UK & European motorway speeds & is easy to do big miles if you find the seats comfortable & aren't over 6'1"

I average about 25 mpg in mine in mixed town and motorway driving. Not too shabby considering the performance available.

All in all I would say that objectively it's an excellent car, it is extremely vice free for a sports car & unless you drive like a gimp (i.e. don't drive it like a hot hatch & think of the physics of driving a RWD sports car...) handling is excellent. It's easy to drive (my wife loves it) and you can commute in it if you want & still get a grin at weekends.

hehe I drive mine like a gimp, its awesome! biggrin

Its light, its RWD, fairly powerful (keeping the VTEC on the boil can be a bind for some people, but for me, see point 1. )

Handles well, very well balanced at least once you "learn" it.

Cabin might be a bit of a tight squeeze if you are a big lad, I'm quite skinny and its perfect for me.

Decent sized boot.

Possibly a bit drony on the motorway - I've swapped the exhaust on mine (which now sounds AWESOME) though so I can't really remember a standard one.

I use mine everyday and have only ever had one issue (MAF sensor playing up, which was fixed by tapping it with a Maglite!).

Flies through tyres which arent cheap, but thats def the way I drive....

FINALLY the attention we in me loves the fact that it looks a lot more expensive than it is and people are always commenting on how nice it is.

biggrin

My box, once warm, is just fine - very sweet indeed. But I know others have 'notchiness'. IMHO half of that is that you can hear the linkage click-clacking right underneath the stick.

It is a noisy car on m-way - it's a small convertible with a high-revving engine, never a good thing for long-distance. But 55 litres means you can't go too far before stopping! wink

The driving position is excellent if you're no more than about 5'10 / 5'11...above that it depends how long your legs are! Heel-n-toe is a piece of cake, too (again, as long as you're not too tall). Seats are pretty comfy, and while they're not heavily bolstered you're so cocooned in there it doesn't matter.

Economy - no better than 30 unless you've an aversion to revs.

To drive? Once the geometry is set-up right, really fun - immediate, direct, very throttle-steerable. Although there's never quite enough feedback from the wheel...

But definitely drive one - VTECs are always marmite cars! Oh, and do a search on s2ki.co.uk about suspension adjustment bolts...

Hopefully you're test drive will be like mine.

  • Turn up in mates Merc
  • Dealer throws us the keys and tells us to come back when we are done
  • Meet Integra Type R on test route
  • Have blast
  • Buy car

/\/\//

Only downside is motorway driving - its fairly noisy. GF hasd a golf cabrio Mk4 and that is silent in comparison.

Other than tha 10k will buy you a good one, with the high revving engine make sure its been serviced on the nose though. Will last forever then.

Gearbox - best I have ever driven. Nothcy when cold but superb when warm.

I would definately recommend one.
Had mine for 3 months so far and is seriously the best car in it's class.
I'm 6ft 1" and have plenty of space - I do around 1000 miles/month, both city and motorway.
Fuels not bad, gearbox awesome once warm.
Tried a boxster, 350z and Z4 before buying this, and only the Z4 came close. Boxster was seriously lacking space, 350z was too bulky and sounded like a tractor. Also had a M Roadster for 6 months before and was a serious waste of money. Bloody expensive (£550-850ish/service!)to run, unreliable engine (always expect major works) and not a great handler.
s2000 engine sounds amazing, handles well, totally reliable and is cheap as chips to run.

do it, you know you want to...

I suppose it depends what shape you are. I am 6'1" with long legs and built like brick outhouse. Very snug in that cockpit to say the least!

Been reading this thread and those on S2Ki for months.

I've had numerous test drives at my local Honda Dealer. Could not hold back any longer and placed an order for a used (05 plate) Black, Red/Black GT on Wednesday. Car found today.

Can't wait.

I agree the red/black is a great combination
I'm on my fourth S!
The current one is a 320 BHP beast

I'd try to up the budget to a +01 car to get the glass rear screen
Don't worry on the notch gearbox. Warm it up and change the oil.
Look out for repair damage, quite a few of the early ones have been off road.

If I was spending my money again I would have stumped up the extra for a glass screen. My plastic one split the other day which was pretty annoying.

I'd agree it's worth getting an '02 - it'll be worth more come resale, so won't actually cost you any more than an '01.*

As for mileage...so long as it's not really leggy (i.e. it'll be over 100k when YOU sell it on), it shouldn't matter - just check the service book.

  • Although to be honest depreciation could be the least of your costs - clutch replacement is £800-900 from a main dealer, and there's the risk of seized suspension adjustment bolts. Not aware of any other big bills beyond the ones any car could have...

May sound LUSH but looks great. Definately the fastest colour!

Wanted a GT as it has got to live outdoors all year on my driveway. The plan is to have the Hardtop fitted from the end of October until the end of February.
You are probably right though about the GT as the soft top looks good enough to do the job all year round.

Roll on Thursday.

Packman

PS I may even give it a first outing to Brands Hatch in the evening. But it won't be going on track - Well not yet anyway.

I'm also thinking about one, but fuel economy is a concern for me.

What sort of mpg can you get from them driving swiftly but not balls-out everywhere? How much is a tank (do they take 95 RON?) and what sort of range does that give?

Cheers smile
