Have recently changed from a dc2 integra to s2000 and I would like to know if anyone else has experience of the shift quality going from 1st to 2nd gears. The car is a my04 and I don't know if it is my gear changing style or indeed an issue with the car as it seems to baulk when going from 1st to 2nd. Have tried shifting slower / faster doesn't seem to make much difference, although shift quality does improve when the car is warmed up. Is it me or do you think this warrants an appointment with my supplying dealer?Any advice greatly appreciated.

I've had two S2000's, a MY04 and a MY05. Both had poor / notchy and obstructive changes from 1st to 2nd when cold. Once the car is really well warmed up the gearchange is fine - but the gearbox oil has to be nicely warm first smile

My MY04 was noticeably better than my current MY05 and the gearchange is decidedly frustrating when cold and on short journey's. Each car is different and some are far better than others. Some will say it's the best gearchange they have ever experienced - I would agree, once the damned thing is warm biggrin

By all means go to a dealer to get it checked but I am sure you will find you get the 'they all do that sir'.

Even having had experience of the poor gearchange when cold with my first S2K I still got my current S2K checked, so bad was the change from 1st to 2nd. It is almost like the clutch is not working or the gearbox is totally shagged ! Once warm, after say 30 minutes of driving it is totally smooth and just what the doctor ordered smile

I do think they all do it to a greater or lesser degree depending on how lucky you are. My MY04 also had a habit of jumping out of first when cold .... just to increase the variety a bit biggrin Your S2K, being a MY04 will have the later gearbox that is better than earlier models - supposedly rolleyes I can't say I have noticed having the 'better' gearbox on either on my cars ..... the thing is, the car as a whole makes up for the notchy gearchange when first starting out and I love it smile

Thanks for the feedback, sounds like you have driven my car! I think to be safe I will have a chat with the supplying dealer who is a Honda main agent . The reason I feel so frustrated is that I am comparing the gearchange with my old dc2 which was so god damn sweet every time!

When warm the S2000 is perfect - rifle-bolt stuff. But because it's so tight it can be notchy when cold.

'teg is a lot smoother...but also a bit 'looser', IYSWIM.

Both are miles better than a lot of the competition...

MY04: As Martin says "rifle bolt" - mines fine, everytime, even from cold - and I tend to drive pretty hard.

Martin - I also have the issue with it popping out of first on the odd occasion, quite rare though. I always put it down to not being quite "in" - make a hell of a bang when it pops back out!

I'd advise care with dealing with Honda over this one. They can have gearbox issues but you also have to be wary of Honda dealers looking for work. Mine seemed to have a bit of a funny noise and I couldn't tell if it was normal or not so took it to my dealer. They said it was one of the bearings so changed it under warranty (the bearings). I was warned about this by another Honda technician (who's won various awards) and what he said turned out to be true - the bearings were replaced but most of the technicians they empoy aren't up to stripping gearboxes so the the gearbos goes shortly after and has to be replaced. THis is exactly what happened to mine - at 18,000 miles. I guess I'll never know whether there was a problem in the first place. So if you have no warranty be careful who you let mess with it or who you take advice from. THe guy I heard to be very good works at Arnold Clark in Stoke. Yes they are a bit notchy when cold and yes they do vary from car to car and yes some occasionally drop out of gear (I think one I tried was 6th) - having just bought a 911, the gearchange is fine but a long shift which I find a bit of a pain in the arse - the Honda change is great. Also if you ever drive a lotus or similar you're realise that gearboxes can feel a much more mechanical in this type of car if you get my meaning.

Luckily, I know the head mechanic at my local Honda dealer so I might have a chat with him before I go ahead and book the car in . Thanks for all of the info.

Redline MTL oil helped improve my 02 and 04 S, you just have to live with it when its cold.
Wouldn't have anyone screwing around inside the box just for your all too common problem.
Try pushing the knob with the palm of your hand as opposed to gripping it.
A nice new Muz one feels better toosmile

Russ.
