Hi - Anything to be wary of or pay particular attention to when I'm looking at the previous model Civic Type R's? Any feeedback would be greatly appreciated!

2nd gear synchro crunching, creaking steering rack, knocking suspension, make sure they've checked the oil level religiously!

Make sure it has a Full Honda Service History (FHSH) Check the intervial times for service are correct. And the items above as mentioned. Don't be put off by higher mileage, if the servicing is correct it will be fine. £10000 would get you a 05'plate 20-30k FHSH Aircon etc.

Ours is currently sitting on 75700 miles and it feels quicker and even better than when we got it with 44500 on the clock.
Check the oil levels frequently , the more you vtec it the more you should check it as this system uses a little oil naturally.
Make sure youve got decent rubber on the front especially in this weather.
Ive never owned a car that i actually turn off the stereo to concentrate and involve myself with the driving....pure enjoyment!

Good points

Try to find one thats been looked after, some are allowed to run without much oil because they drink it and some people forget to fill it up.

I would only go for a Type R with air con as the resale value is much higher and the car can get quite hot in summer without it (mine was a/c and my best friends wasn't). My Mk2 was also noticably faster than his Mk1 in a straight line (although that maybe just down to difference between his and mine).

iirc they did more than change the bumper & headlights when they facelifted it, i think it was top gear put them both round the track & the facelifted ctr beat the pre-facelift.

Thanks for that.

I know the mk2 had a slightly lightened flywheel but I didn't think that would give it any real world advantage.

There is no discernible difference in performance between the two, lol!!

Mk1 was driven round the Top Gear track in the wet, Mk2 was in the dry wink

I am not so sure about speeds between pre and post facelift, i know there is a .2sec drop in 0-60 and a change in Torque due to flywheel being lightened, but i was also of the opinion that in the "real" world it was going to make much of a difference. I will say this though my mate has two CTR's a 2001 on 78k and a 2005 on 40k, he reliably informs me that the 2001 car was dyno'd when he got it and was good for 189.9bhp, and it has subsiquently got about 1bhp higher for 10k he has done (now about 197BHP), his new CTR 2005 banged out a stella 200.7bhp. The reason he has had them dyno'd so often is he part owns a garage and has them checked at the service intervals. I dunno just my 2p worth, maybe the post face lift was a bit quicker but i can see my self opening a can of worms...... Angry CTR owners coming my way.......

..or reputable garages; TDi, TGM et al. I'm hopefully getting a DC2 soon for trackdays etc and I'll most likely use TGM for the work/services.
