S2000 Advice...
Discussion
I wonder if anybody can spare me some time..?
The Mini is up for sale and I think an S2000 is the likely replacement. I drove a brand new one last week and have wanted one since.
I think I will have between 15 and 17k to spend in Feb and wouldlike some advice if possible.
I see that the facelift model was introduced in 2004 - looks nice. Were there any engine changes?
It looks like a 2004 with 40k on the clock is in my price range....?
Is the hard top worth looking out for?
Any advice or suggestions welcome
Thanks
Ben

Welcome to the world of VTech! (almost)...
To my knowledge, there were no changes to the engine since it was released in 2000. The changes between the 2000, 2002 and 2004 models were purely cosmetic (larger wheels, different dash layout, some different trimming and colours...).
If you plan to use the car on a daily basis I would suggest to go for the hardtop. I tend to use mine 6 months of the year. It also makes it a different driving experience...
Hope this helps.
As far as Honda is concerned there have been no changes to the S2000 engine at all in it's lifetime.
The only thing people say about the 04 facelift onwards is it seems to have a softer / smoother VTEC enagagement.
As for a hardtop - I am on my second S2000 - both with hardtops but wouldn't particularly miss it if it was taken away. It is great when the weather is really bad. The car is quieter when it's on but it is more prone to creak. Visibility is massively improved when it's on but it takes two people to put it on the car and uses up alot of space sitting in my garage!

Agree with John on hardtop...if the car will be garaged, there's probably little point.
2004 model...different wheels and tyres, and suspension softened-off a little to compensate for smaller sidewalls. Supposed to be a little easier to drive as a result...but IMHO getting the geometry properly sorted on an 02/03 will have pretty-much the same effect. Interior nicer too...esp the half-red seats and door-cards (option).
'04 probably worth spending the extra on, as it'll retain (most of) it come resale. But not that big a deal if you find an '03 for a song...
Hop over to www.s2ki.co.uk - good forum, good for-sale board too.

My advice - Go for it!
Best car I've owned, but be careful of the wet and roundabouts.
I didn't by a GT as dont have anywhere to keep the hardtop and I didn't think I'd use it much. As long as its not raining the top should be down- thats why you by a convertable isn't it!!!
I went for the MY04 as the subtle changes make the car look nicer and (hopefully) will keep its value better come re-sale. Although there are definately no plans for that as yet.
Good luck with the imminant purchase.

Shame you're not in the market now. My 04 is for sale.
As for engine changes, apart from the comments already made above, the 04+ cars also use less oil (a fact mentioned in their brochure).
They clearly changed something, but nothing substantial, it seems.
The gearbox also has some carbon thing-a-me-bobs that the earlier cars didn't have.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I will try and stretch for an 2004 or 2005, will get it in February all being well. Gives me a few months to check the market.
Mini Cooper s has almost gone now so the space in the garage is waiting.
The S2000 has no problems as far as Top Gear and other surveys go which is good enough with me. I will watch the forums...
Thanks again

I've got a MY04 with 40k on the clock that'll prob be for sale in March....drop me a line!
I havent got the hard top with mine and Im glad to be honest - gives much more flexiblity when getting the roof down when the mood takes you.
IMO I think the MY04 cars look much better than the earlier models, but of course, I would say that.

There are a few niggles...but not really anything earth-shattering, and nothing THAT widespread. It's a very well built car, like all Hondas.Suspension bolts is probably the only deal-breaker, IMHO...check s2ki.co.uk.

You'll have only had it a year! Why you getting rid so quick?I get bored easy! Probably swap it for a 350Z or even another, slightly newer, s2k - I have been VERY impressed by it.

I also wasn't too impressed with the 350Z when I drove one earlier this year, sound of the V6 was nice but not the same as the 9K scream of the VTEC

350Z too soundproofed and cultured. A good exhaust will sort that...on either car! IMHO S2000 not as good (standard) for sound as a stock DC2 ITR (louder, more bassy and snarly...shame there's a roof in the way! )...and even that's shaded by a Caterham Superlight 135 (let alone an R400!)...which must be the Satchmo of 4-pots! Big issue is only 2 seats and a small boot (mind you comng from a Mini neither of those issues concerned you when you bought then so its probably not an issue now.
However your older now & might be planning on kids in the near ish future so perhaps a thought to practicality is needed?

I'm looking at the moment too. Current car (S3) is up for sale:

Have driven a brand new one recently and loved it. Same as you practicality doesn't really matter. As long as it fits clubs in the boot, and get me down to Le mans wit a tent and a bag I'm a happy man!
Happy hunting.

Have you tired A-Plan for insurance? I found them to be the cheapest for me by far. You can definitely fit a set of golf clubs in the boot as well as it's pretty much where mine permanently live. I've had the car over a year now and still really like it, but that said mine came with a long list of under the skin modifications that truly make it superb. As for noise, I've got a HKS Racing Suction intake and full HKS exhaust. I used to like driving my old 5ltr TVR griffith through tunnels but the S2k is a close second!
Best of luck - Chris

Echo the A Plan comments - I renew in 3 weeks - 26 male, only 1 years NCB due to an accident that was 100% my fault and 3 pts for speeding. Car lives on the drive. £1341 which i didnt think was too bad....
