One of the things that disappointed me on taking delivery of the S2k was the lack of aural delight.

My car currently has the standard exhaust and filter.

Its my daily driver, so I do a fair few motorway miles. For this reason, I'm happy to keep the exhaust standard as I cant be arsed with the "droning".

I noticed that the standard filter, is basically an induction kit enclosed in a cold air box with feed. So in the interests of science, I took the lid off the airbox and went for a little run out.

It makes so much difference, it sounds like the devil!

Only problem is (it warmish today) quite a noticeable drop in performance, certainly more than i'd accept in a trade off, so the lids gone back on.

Bearing this in mind, and my adversion to spending money, would drilling the air box (My oh my, I'm a 17 year old chav) give the extra volume without the downsides?

If you want CAI (cold air intake) with all the benefits of the "angry elephant" comforting your ears, then do it right and stop fannying about.
J's Racing, and others I can't think of right now (look or ask in s2k.com) would do the trick.
Engine heat soak on an open filter will (as you've already noticed) make things worse - hence why you need the likes of those mentioned above.

Hop over to s2ki's UK forum - they've discussed air intakes/filters/snorkels ad-nauseam over there. Most are snake-oil, performance-wise, but a few do actually help a little.

Then again, if it's just sound you're after, why not get a spare airbox lid (or two) and experiment:-
1) Drill a few holes...maybe cover up inside with wire/fabric mesh.
2) Cut the front half off, create a wire-mesh 'cage' and attach that (maybe again line with some fine fabric mesh).

I agree with what's already be said, don't try and do it cheap as you could risk having to spend a fortune putting a money saving mistake right.

Take the lid off the airbox which is a cheap and effective mod. Lots of S2K drivers do it. It's reckoned to cost 1-2bhp but the sound is great (apparently).

We left ours alone on the induction side but fitted a full supersprint system and it sounds lovely (bit expensive though)

I've a spare airbox with the insides cut out. There is also a method to only open the front of the airbox.

I got bored of the induction sound (a saxo will sounds the same with a sock taped over the intake) with the whine when it was stationary.

I swapped my stock airbox for a K&N induction kit, east to fit and not overly expensive either around £185. If you liked the sound of the lid off then you will love the sound of an induction kit. K&N reckons you get an extra 5 - 7 bhp. I gotta say the car does feel, drive and sound better than with the stock airbox.

Buy one and you'll be looking for the nearest tunnel to drive thru time and time again !!

I've been told S2000 with an induction kit in the engine bay lose power due to heat soak as mentioned earlier. I wouldn't go for anything like a K&N on something as highly factory tuned as an S2000. As above i'd either go for the Js racing or Top fuel as they have a gorgeous carbon box and actually make power. (dyno proven not max power mag!!!)

It's up to the individual owner msyelf. As I have owned a S2000 for the last two and half years that is my opinion, and I can say that with the induction kit the car does feel like it breaths better. You do get heatsoak though, but only in traffic. As for the increase in bhp the figures are clearly illustrated on the K&N website whether they are right or wrong, the induction kit has undergone dyno testing.

Max power to me is when I hit the 9000 rev limiter.

That wasn't aimed at anyone in a sh**ty way and I'm not saying the K&N doesn't have power figures to back it up. I'm simply saying the S2000 engine like all the top end Honda engines have undergone a lot of R&D and it's very hard to improve on it. That's why IN MY OPINION i wouldn't go anywhere near a filter that was in the engine bay.

I had a look at a few air filters, even got a quote from GruppeM for a bespoke kit, came out at £850 but its a hell of a beast, I'd post some pics but don't know how to!! In the end I have opted for a BMC for £260 (will be getting rid of my S2k in a couple of years, but only to get a newer one!). Better than the Piper Cross as it has a cotton filter and an enclosed carbon box (apparently) to keep it cool. Bit more than the K&N but I think it's worth it.

Mate at work has a BMC on his civic type r and it's an excellent set up. Comes with an enclosed filter and a pipe that you locate in the bumper feeding lovely cold air!! Let us know what you think when you've fitted it!

Will do, I'm getting it fitted the same time as a Buddy Club exhaust, I know it's loud and I might have been better off getting a HKS or something like that, but it's 400 quid cheaper and from what I've seen / heard on other S2's it seems to do the job. Had to have it sent from Japan so will have them both fitted in a couple of weeks (early August) so will let you know. Does anyone know how to embed pics? Seems a shame not to be able to display the GruppeM that I can't afford!

You need to host the pic somewhere, (i use photobucket.com) which will then give you a link.

Then

Job done.

For some reason it doesn't open the link directly, you need to copy and paste it. I aren't normally this bad with computers, honest.....

In order for an image to appear, it has to end in .jpeg/jpg or .gif
Anything else will be just a link, and with the @ in it, considered an email address.
