Your link seems to be broken.
The concensus seems to be 17s are probably the best compromise. 18s can look better but they can compromise the ride and handling. The 99-03 OEM 16s look (IMO) too small and lost in the arches. The 17s on the 04+ car look better but don't compromise the ride.
The problem with the S2000 is there are very few wheels which have the correct offset. If you go for non-optimal offsets, they can rub and/or stick out too far from the arches.
At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, check out s2ki.co.uk and spend some time playing with the search function. There are a LOT of threads on there about which aftermarket wheels.
There used to be a utility at www.tirerack.com (they sponsor the US side of the board on s2ki) which allowed you to see what different wheels look like on the S2000. I haven't checked for years though so it may not still be there.

You'll not go far wrong with the likes of:
Mugen
Wedsport
Rays
Works
You're looking for a wheel with +59 offset on the rear and +52 on the front - 17x8.5 and 17x7.5 respectively. Bolt pattern is 5x114.3
You can probably go for a lower offset by about 10-15 mm which will push the wheel out more to make it more flush.
If you change the width of the wheel say to 9" on the rear, then you'll already be pushing 12.7 mm out, so the offset becomes more critical at that point.

For a street car those 16's look hideous!
Fine on a track car for performance, but does nothing visually for an otherwise normal everyday S2000.

Same reason they stuck 19's on the new CTR, pose value more than performance. I have 17"s on mine and can't wait to fit my 16" Mugen M7's, I hate the ride quality with 17's
Ride quality is not limited to just the wheel size.
Going 16 with bigger sidewall on standard suspension will not do very much for you, especially on spirited runs on tight bends.
If you want to improve your setup, invest in a decent set of coilovers with adjustable damping and forged 17's.
Less rotational mass will help with many aspects of the performance and handling of the car.

Agree with most of that, except for the coilovers, which if you're not careful will rob the car of some suspension compliance, certainly on B-roads. Not recommended without VERY careful research.
16"s with the OEM S02's will be just fine as far as handling goes, or if not S02's then any other stiff-sidewall tyre. With 17"s a softer-sidewall tyre would be more useful to retain the balance between handling precision and ride-quality. Of course it partly depends if you've a pre-04 or a post-04 car, as there were notable suspension changes in 04.
Those Mugen M7s are grim!
MF-10s are really very nice though. Alas, they're as rare as rocking horse excrement and cost a fortune.
Volk Racing do some nice wheels that fit the S2000. The TE-37s are a personal favourite of mine. They go very well with Monte Carlo Blue - someone on s2ki had that colour/wheel combo and it worked really well. Again, they're not cheap though....

The car in the picture in your profile is Monte Carlo Blue, jonner. I used to have one myself!
The pale blue that the S2000 comes in is Nurburgring Blue. A pearlescent dark Royal Navy Blue was introduced with the 2004 revision - I had one of those two, and it's a much darker colour than yours. Then Laguna Blue - a more vivid electric blue - was introduced with the 2006 revisions.
