S2000 newbie q's
Discussion
hello all,
thinking of buying an S2000 this weekend but need a little advice.
i'm looking at either spending less and going for a pre-2002 without the relevant changes (glass rear screen and a few suspension mods??)
or spending a little more and going for an 02.
would i be wiser spending the extra (what will be a couple of grand) or making the saving and living with the older car?
i've owned a TVR Griffith so know all about RWD and wayward characteristics as well as plastic rear screens.
Just want to know what wider opinion is!

If you're happy with the plastic and the suspension set-up, then no reason not to go for an older one. Suspension geometry can be adjusted anyway, and tyres can be changed and pressures toyed with.
Ah...one reason - you may do, but the next buyer might not. Not sure if resale on a Y or 51 might be worse/more difficult.
In all seriousness, mileage and condition are the two key factors, naturally. Mileage will also help come resale. One thing to look out for - suspension adjustment bolts - the galvanising on them isn't particularly thick and it's far from unknown for them to start corroding. Too much corrosion and they seize in the collar (not a massive problem but some cars affected...s2ki has a detailed thread about it, think 12-15 member cars affected so far, no pattern of age/milage/usage yet)...which due to Honda's fantastic parts system requires a whole new wishbone at £400+labour each wishbone.
Had mine ('03 near end of warranty) checked soon after I bought it and 3 of 20 had started corroding, but all were fixable.
Oh...one other thing with pre-02's (again more info on S2ki) - couple of recalls, one clutch related (054 clutch was replaced by the 055 clutch for '02s, not sure what the issue was but it was relatively minor), and one other I can't remember. And all S2k alloys are prone to mild corrosion, for some reason.

that's excellent thanks,
i am looking at slightly higher mileage cars but dont intend to sell the car on for some time (hopefully a couple a happy years), unless i am forced to.
interesting about the suspension bolts! is this the kind of thing you can spot yourself if you have a look underneath or will I need expert assistance? thinking of getting RAC to check it out as it's not a main dealer car.

How much may I ask? And miles/year? Email me if you want thanks
it was a part ex deal with my TT. already sold a car priavtely this year and couldn't be arsed with the hassle again.
basically it came to about £10,500. it is a 2000/x with 83k on the clock (acually less than my TT so not to bothered by that), but it has only had one owner and it comes serviced as well so i felt it not to be too bad a deal. plus i have a 3 month no quibbles guarantee rather than a crappy warranty but i will probably get a warranty as well seeing as they are so cheap.
one question i should have asked before but forgot to: with the TT at the kind of mileage the cambelt service is very important, basically it needs to be done. are the any equivalent things that NEED to be done with the S?

signed on the dotted line for a 2000 silverstone with red leather s2000.
drove it. loved it. over the moon!

Hope you do want to keep it for a few years I've got red interior and tried to sell it last year. Not a sniff. Keeping mine now though.
sorry to hear that, but ultimately its all about price. you have to swallow your pride sometimes and competively price the car. unfortuantely, how you feel about the car and its value really means very little. its a cracking car though so you win either way!

IIRC the F20C has a timing chain, not a belt.
Main thing with the S is suspension adjustment bolts (make sure they still move!). And check the platinum plugs have been done at around 54/63k.

3 main places decent ones will come up for sale.
If you're in the South, S2000-4u tend to have stock in all the time (surprisingly). Long debate as to the 'calibre' of the trader on S2ki, but little actual evidence of him pratting people around, a lot more noise (read it as you will). If they're reasonably local might be worth going there but keeping your eyes open and treating it more like a private sale than a dealer sale - suspect his prices will be cheaper than main dealer stock, so could be an option...

I went to the new type r launch and the boss didn't like it, bit she loved the berlina black with red/black leather, so now we have a lovely 05 model, just need to get some induction noise now. And practise the power slides, (it's been a long time since my Capri days) and, were's the sunshine.

It was - 12k for an 03. This is full red by the way, not the red/black. You can only get it inside Silverstones. Very much a love/hate thing with that interior and a bugger to shift.
