I'm thinking of getting an Accord Type R, do they cope well with high miles ~100k? Any weak points?

I've got one approaching 100K. Mine seems to tramline quite a bit, the boot fills with water and the bolsters on the drivers seat are getting bobbly. Besides those everything is fine.

I find the tank annoyingly small I only just make Birmingham to London and back on a tankful. The other thing about them is they are doing 4500ish rpm at motorway cruise speeds so they aren't that refined.

The big issue is the syncromesh on 5th should have been fixed by a recall but some have been missed and it's expensive to fix. There getting on a bit so I don't know how much help Honda would be if you ask them to fix it for free.

To be honest now I've done the VTEC thing I think I'll look elsewhere when getting my next car, the novelty has worn off.

Good review of the bad points!!

Yep it does tramline a bit and can torque steer pretty well even with the LSD!
Your boot sounds like its had a knock mate!? - I have heard of this before actually but thankfully never suffered from it!
My seats aren't bobbly however I have the Leather Reccaros! ;-) (A rare but great option if you can find it!)
Yep I get 260 - 300 miles a tank not very good but depends on how you drive!
I don't know a VTEC thats refined at motorway speeds (bar my S2000 which is pretty good as it has a 6th gear) The Accord isn't too bad as its a 2.2! Try a Civic VTI Coupe!! ;-) Thats painful!

I've had mine about 2 years now and it still makes me smile everytime I hit VTEC! If its wet and my wife is driving to the same place in S2000 it make me smile even more!

Its not a comfy motorway cruiser (if thats what you need) It is however a very focussed capable car available for 5 - 8k nowdays but is also cheapish and reliable to run. When put like that I can't really think of much that comes close.

But I would like it wouldn't I??! ...........;-)

I also own a ATR a 2001 Y reg one that I have driven for 85k miles in 4 years, the car has done 106k in total now. Primary reasons for purchasing were the rarenest of the car, reputation (see EVO mag), reliability at the time of purchase the Accord was in the top 5 cars, performance, affordability with respect to servicing and projected costs if anything were to go wrong.

Visit the atr.org.uk site there are plenty of owners and information there and all a very level headed bunch. The only known "problems" with the car is the 5th gear syncro problem in pre-facelift cars, although as I understand it some of this production run had the modification to the problem sorted. The mechanism for controlling the auto-levelling of the head lights can go wrong.

Personally I had a clutch and steering rack replaced under warranty at 3 years old at about 50k miles, since then touch wood apart from following the service schedule nothing has gone wrong with the car.

Performace figures on the car either those published by Honda or by magzine test do differ but to say that the car is a rewarding car to drive is some way to explaining the feeling of driving one. Corners can be approached and dealt with speeds that most FWD saloons of its era couldn't touch. Even today for the value it punchs above its weight.

With the DC2 and S2000 it was one of the proper Type-R's that didn't have the iVTEC. Just VTEC either on or off. The beauty being that good gear changes are require to keep it in the zone.

I purchased it with a view to replacing it about 2 years ago, there just doesn't seem to be another car out there that appeals like the ATR. Some people like them/others don't a bit like marmite. I shall probably drive mine till it falls apart or Honda decide to do a proper replacement.
