Can anyone tell me if I need to reprogramme my remote keyfob to the car if I replace the battery ? and if so how do I do this ?

I have a 2000 Civic 5 dr

I wouldn't presume so. There's likely a capacitance that holds the data for quite a while before it becomes 'lost'.

I dont know how long the batteries have been dead for, it was like it when I purchased the car.
How to a teach a new remote if I need to do it ?

Now you just know that going into a Honda dealer is just going to be REALLY EXPENSIVE !!

The battery in my Civic key fob is going slowly (range down from 50m to about 5m now) but it's some wierdo 9v thing. It looks like the 1.5v or 12v jobs you get at the supermarket but isn't. Haven't got a Maplins local to me, so tried supermarkets, B&Q, Halfords etc to no avail... grumpy

Well, rather than speculate with an air of disdain, why not actually phone one or more and ask?
Then you'll know for sure.
I can't see it taking more than 30 mins - so that's around £25-30.
