Quick S2000 gearing question
Discussion
What final drive do UK cars have?
I've seen the number 4.1 paraded quite often, and with the ratio's suggested that makes about 50mph in 1st, 80mph in 2nd and just over 100mph in 3rd. Yet I've seen other numbers suggested too, like 4.44.
Anyone know the real final drive and if the S2000 is really that long geared?
Just interested in the cars and wondering if there is any variety if/when I end up looking at them. Might imports have the different final drive?
Cheers

Yeah, thats a little bit less than the car in Gran Turismo 4 gets, but that one revs to 9500rpm almost, vs what appears to be 9000rpm for the real car.
I wonder why most websites are giving the final drive so low then... I wonder if there is another reduction anywhere in the drivetrain?
Those speeds sound alot better and "normal"... what kinda rpm's are they shifting at then, about 8.5k?
Kinda looking to maybe getting one, money is an issue so it won't be a facelift (03 on)
I'm not keen on the polished alloys of the late early versions (02/03's??), so is there any reason to not just buy an earlier plate as possible as long as it's in good condition and has had recall work done?
I guess alot of bits can just be retro fitted too if there are any nice features that were added...
Cheers for any quick tips on which model to choose

I'm thinking about 9k (actually 8900rpm ) for changes on the above.
Shamelessly stolen from my pal Craig on www.s2ki.co.uk 4.1 is the stock final drive.
Gear..........4.1 top speed ..............4.57 top speed
1....................43 mph.......................38 mph
2...................66 mph........................59 mph
3...................91 mph........................81 mph
4..................116 mph.....................104 mph
5..................138 mph.....................124 mph
6..................165 mph (theoretical)...148 mph
1st is geared a bit longer that I recall.

There is only one final drive for the F20C engine. Jap imports are the same but come with a limiter that's at about 112 mph IIRC. However people fit their own final drive.

4.10 is the final drive. You can easily get fd up to 4.77 if you want to mod.

Looks interesting.
Not sure why they are desperate for shorter gears though, they look really good stock... It looks like the power cams are going by 30mph in 1st so if you want the peak grunt at any point you have the gear for it from 30mph upwards
Gonna have to find one at a traders and go have a drive, see what I think!

Whereabouts are you Dave?
Leeds... there are a few for sale up fairly local at traders. I just need to sort a day one weekend and go have a look!
I've got a few friends who have had sporty Honda's before, and a friend knows three people who have had S2000's and they've all loved them and had very few if any problems... sound like a fun, fairly focussed characterful car that is also fairly practical and reliable too

Check the For Sale section on www.s2ki.co.uk Good cars there
Yep, a few good ones...

Look v.nice for the money. Not after spending over £12.5k, and not after a complete mint model or concours style... Afterall the earliest ones are 6yrs old now and a reasonable avg.miles would be 50-60k maybe with some stone chips or seat wear etc.
Seen some good ones down under £10k but the miles are banging on 100k, and I am worried by the idea of those replacement bushes which still sound a bit un-resolved with Honda or aftermarkets... Heard people saying big bills for replacements.
Thanks for all the help anyway, next step for me is test drive a few and of course get some quotes for insurance
EDIT: Do the pre-facelift models have an oil temp gauge? The later dash ones seem to have a smaller rpm gauge with a few more gauges but can't see one on the earlier models.

Yep, there are some oddities out there which are probably best avoided
I'll read the FAQ's and buyers guide's over on S2Ki/uk and get a drive sorted so I can decide if it's the kind of car for me, and if it is then I'll join up and ask you all lots of questions
Thanks for the time responding!
Cheers

They are, but under 12k you're going to get one in pretty ropey condition IMHO
Ask around on s2ki - plenty of helpful and knowledgeble folk there

AE can I ask what you mean by ropey? As I was hoping to get one around that price and thought it'd be a bargain! Do you mean in terms of interior wear etc?
I've seen a few of the 99/00 models with 60k and FHSH in the less desireable colours going for around £10k... I'm sure as age and owners add up the chances of getting a dodgy one go up, but with any purchase the term "buyer beware" is still important!
S2Ki FAQ's, buying guides and general reading are giving me plenty to go on
I guess after viewing four or five cars at traders, even ones out of your price range, you'll get a good feel for what is good and what is not
