Civic Type R big end bearing!!!!
Discussion
Ok, this is a bit of a long story, and i dont know perticulars, but i will do my best!
my mate has just text me saying he has broke his car! he says he has thrown the big end bearing on his new shaped (not the new new one but the new one!) Civic Type R! Hodna has looked at it and said that it his fault and that he ran it with no oil. he is 100% positive the thing had oil in it.
so just wondered if anyone else has had a similar probelm?? what are honda like on these kinda things??
i have read about guys reving the stock bottom end to 9K so i know it has to be strong enoguh even if he missed a gear or something.
hope someone can help.
thanks chris.

to be brutally honest, they are probably right.
K20A is a solid engine, just they don't tollerate lack of oil and they do use a bit, don't keep it toped up and there you go.
That said, when they run short of oil, you get some very hard warnings, like it will rev-limit you to 4000 rpm and no go onto vtec etc.
try asking on here http://civictype-r.co.uk/phpbb2/index
I have been a member on there for over 2 years and I have never read anything like this happening. the engines usually go bang when you change down and put it into 2nd instead of 4th at 8000rpm.
Another problem is oil starvation but unless you are tracking them really hard it shouldn't be a problem. they usually fit a baffled sump to solve the problem.
Some K20a's require a regular top up of oil so it might have been low. Another possibility is a lot of people fit superchargers JRSC and when they come to sell they remove them before sale. (this reduces engine life)

Yep,
Ive been a member on the CTR BB since inception and read about this happeneing once or twice in the early days and it was down to no oil.
visit www.type-r.org and ask the owner of that site (stanford). It happened to him!

It can happen with low oil level (but still above MIN)if the car has been driven with a bit of spirit.
The standard honda sump isn't baffled iirc and you can get air sucked up during hard cornering.
A common upgrade for the trackday crowd is a mugen sump which is baffled.
I had a CTR for 2 years and tbh, I was expecting oil useage between services, but it never used a drop even with some hard driving.
