09 Jazz kicks up the acceleration higher up the revs
Discussion
I generally change gear at or below about 2k revs, but the times I've ventured higher on the rev gauge the acceleration seems more pointed - is this something specific to the Jazz or do all cars do this?
It feels odd as the Jazz is perceived as an unexciting car for unexciting people, whereas to take advantage of this extra acceleration (which is not un-nice) it feels like race track driving, 25mph in 2nd gear and the like.
Is it related to VTEC, whatever that is?

A small, modern petrol engine of any type, 2000rpm is well below peak torque, never mind power. Basically you're using very little of the engine's capability, and getting the occasional glimpse of what it has when you rev it a bit higher.
While VTEC does have an effect on performance at higher rpm, by changing the cam profile, it doesn't sound like you're getting close to the rpm where that would be a factor.
Without being impolite, are you a bit older, and learned to drive on much older cars?

As above, the Jazz's redline is what, 6-7000 rpm? (sold the wifes Mk2 a while back, I can't remember). Peak power will usually be around 500-1000 rpm below the redline. At 2000 rpm you've probably only for around 1/4 of the peak power.
VTEC tweaks the valve timings for more power, I think the RPM where it cuts in varies with load but I wouldn't expect it to do anything below 3-4000 rpm.

Sounds like you have experience driving diesel cars but not so much driving petrol It feels odd as the Jazz is perceived as an unexciting car for unexciting people, whereas to take advantage of this extra acceleration (which is not un-nice) it feels like race track driving, 25mph in 2nd gear and the like.

The engines in these with the i-VTEC thingy change cam profiles at about 3500rpm, can hear the engine note change. It's more as an economy measure but you do get a noticeable increase in power around 3500-4000rpm as they kind of change from being an 8v engine to a 16v engine.
Bear in mind they have 100bhp in just over a ton, they are surprisingly nippy little things, you just never see them driven quickly

Ha, thank you, no I just don't care about going fast or looking cool, that's why we bought a Jazz in the first place. 2k rpm gets me away from the lights the same speed as everyone else, and I hope I'm right in thinking that it uses less petrol than bombing it everywhere at 3.5k, I think 8070mph on the motorway is the only time it ever gets up over 3000rpm.
VTEC just kicked in, yo!

I recall seeing a piss-take thread on here from someone boasting about it, but I can't find it now.

All these comments are making me want to trade in my atr!
Don't.I've had both ATR & Jazz so am well placed to offer opinion
Nonetheless it is quite possible to get enjoyment from driving even the most cooking of cars, that is what I am seeing here.
I bought my now wife a 1995 cinquecento whilst she was studying. It was a shed load of fun down the lanes here in North Wales. Lift off oversteer, the lot! 10/10ths everywhere!
It could change direction like a wasp!
If anything lugging the engine around like that at barely above idle is going to use more fuel. In day to day general use I'd be changing up not much earlier than 3k revs.
If you're asking it to accelerate or climb a hill then give it a bit more revs - nothing bad will happen even if you wring it right out to the red line and it'll be a lot more enjoyable!

Okay so I paid attention during the nursery drop-off, and in a 30mph limit from a dead start I get up to 2.5k in 1st, 2k in 2nd, and then switch to 4th gear and pretty much just alternate between 4th and 5th depending on what the traffic is doing and whether I'll need to brake/accelerate any time soon. This is around 1.5-2k - idle is at 600rpm so I'm nowhere near it and the engine only starts to physically struggle if it drops below 1k.
And as an experiment, from a dead start on the expressway, I got as high as 5k in 2nd gear at 50mph, and 5k in 3rd gear at 70mph. Cruising at 50mph in 5th gear is probably 2.5k plus or minus.
And 2.5k incidentally is where the additional acceleration kicks in, so maybe that's why I'm subconsciously changing up before that happens as 99% of the time I don't need it, possibly when accelerating up a hill from a slow start. The only time I would be driving where high revs and acceleration would be needed would be ragging it around a winding hilly country lane, which these days is pretty much never.
