So I have an old Honda CRV that I really like. It's done 160k without complaint, and it's great for camping, paddleboards, kayaks, all of that.

It just passed its MOT again with no problems except an empty washer bottle.

BUT - the air conditioning seems to have packed up. I went to get it regassed, and they said it was the compressor - and then advised against repairing it. Uneconomical for one - and also - could lead to further problems - a bit of 'leave well alone'.

I was thinking maybe this is the time to sell the car and get something spankier - but I didn't realise it - used cars are at stupid price levels. I don't want to be spending £16k on a Skoda Octavia.

I will see then if I can get the compressor replaced or repaired, and worry about a new car later - but I wondered if anyone has any experience or advice in this area. Is it worth doing?

I look forward to being told to open the windows.

You’ve kind of answered your own question…
you like the car, it’s passed it’s MOT…. it’s no more than a deposit on a newer car you’ve already said you don’t want or need.

We’ve also got an 05 CR-V with an aircon issue. It was re-gassed, which promptly escaped. It’s a bumper off job to find the leak as it’s not in the top part of the system. It’s our second car and only used for local hops, so we will probably get round to sorting it at some point (although it’s been almost 18 months since the problem came to light…. so not top of the list.

I replaced the compressor on my 06 Civic last year (i-ctdi engine). I took a chance on one from a breakers for £80 and it's been fine since.

However... aircon issues on Hondas of this generation are very common and are often diagnosed poorly. What made them come to the conclusion of the compressor itself as it's actually not the most common point of failure. The air con relay, wearing of the compressor clutch and a leaking condenser are.
