Fitting Apple CarPlay to 8-10 yo CRV

Hi,
I am planning to buy CRV in 2021. I wonder, if I can easily fit such device: https://www.halfords.com/technology/car-audio/car-... if the car I buy wont have CarPlay?

Have exactly that one in our Stepwgn, works well. Not many others have a proper volume knob, handy if you don't have steering wheel controls. If you've got a factory reversing camera you may need an adaptor to bring it to standard voltage, I used one and have the factory camera working fine.

There's a very similar DAB version out now (XAV-AX1005DB) for not a lot more - £278 at Halfords, you might need an extra aerial though.

You can also get a 'fitting kit' which makes it a neat and integrated installation.

I've used the 'Connects2' stuff in a few cars (Toyota,VW and Porsche) and have been pretty impressed with the quality. Their fascia surround thing is usual a very good match for the factory materials.

You can get the fascia just on it's own, and then a standard ISO to Sony wiring harness, but the 'kits' seem to be good value to connect aerials, steering wheel buttons and so on.

It's an easy DIY job in an older japanese car. Find yourself a youtube vido on 'remove Honda CRV stereo' and you'll have the whole thing done on a Saturday afternoon. It's basically just 'plug and play' with a fitting kit as above.

Can someone explain to me why Apple Carplay is desirable? We've got it in one of our cars and I find it a bit crap.

Firstly, I have to turn off my Bluetooth.

Then I have to go into the system and choose the right port.

When it is working, the screen doesn't swipe easily. I have decided that car screens prefer to be poked, not swiped.

The stuff available on Carplay is quite heavily restricted by Apple. You CAN get what you want, if you're prepared to jailbreak your phone.

I have waze or Google maps for navigation, Pocket Casts for podcasts, Spotify, YT Music or Apple Music for tunes, Siri for hands-free sending a message that I’m on my way home. What else would I really want?

Personally I'd like Youtube and ability to have online radio stations. I CAN do it, but not via the Carplay interface.

On the subject of Siri...I've got this.....working on it....

Err, if you plug it in and it just works, then you already have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. So the OP is asking how he can be like you, but in an older car.

If you are saying you run those things on your phone, then presumably 'plug in my phone' just means plugging in an Aux audio lead so the sound comes through the car? In which case to answer your question, you might want Apple Car Play (or Android Auto) so that you have all those features neatly integrated in your dashboard, in a more 'car friendly' screen than trying to poke at a mobile phone while driving. And with steering wheel controls integrated - so you can control volume, music tracks, talk to siri/google assistant etc using steering wheel buttons.
