I'm looking for a little advice, please.

Number 1 Son is looking to upgrade from his 97, Nissan Micra 1.0 (first car, given to him at the princely cost of £300).

The car he has found is for sale at our local Honda dealer and is a 18 plate Civic 1.0 Turbo with 7500 miles on the clock.

I am not familiar with this 3 cylinder (127 BHP) engine and was wondering if any of my fellow PHers had any experience of the car?

Any real life experiences welcome.

Thanks

I can only offer that I have two friends (in the same family), both car enthusiasts, who have this engine and rate it highly. I’ve been in each car (Civics) and they pull well, reasonable refinement etc. I can’t give any info on fuel economy but no problems as far as I’m aware.
One had so squeaks and rattled on the interior trim rectified under warranty.

I have the 1.5 and it goes well

The 1.0 struggles a bit and you have to rev it, with this in mind the economy is no where near the claimed figures. One salesman stated around mid 30’s my 1.5 averages 40mpg on a tank with mixed driving, 48 on a run. I would go for the 1.5

I agree with the previous reply. The 1.0 needs more work to keep going and I too went for the 1.5.
Mine's been used for town work and long distance and i've been very impressed, good driving position, excellent cruising capability, very good mpg and plenty of load space.
Also see if the service pack ( 2,3 or 5 yrs is included in the sale) and you're got yourself a good value, reliable & affordable car that's also different from the crowd.
As you can probably tell, i'm very pleased with mine and only question for me is should I have gone for the Type R !!!

Haha, exactly the same as me. I did test the R and I couldn’t bring myself to play 27k. So I opted to spend 17k on the 1.5 sport plus.

Loads of room, good boot and when you put your foot down it shifts. BUT it is a bit dull. Very tempted with the R as real life MPG is mid 30’s and that is a lot better than the golf R. But the looks, I would get the piss taken big time if I got the Type R

Yes, I find my Prestige slightly dull but competent (funnily enough the same conclusion when I tested a Golf R estate !! ).If Honda could change the red front seats & rear wing on the R then I might take the plunge.

Well the deal has been done.

9k miles on a 18 place 1.0 SE turbo.

We looked at the 1.5 but it's an extra £5k, which is just not in budget.

He is stepping up from a 1.0 1997 Nissan micra so he is going to notice the difference.

I love mine. You can get 60mpg on an economy run, it's quick enough to easily keep up with everyday traffic and as said, lots of clever tech.

Enjoy.
