Civic mk8 head unit install problems

Hi, hopefully somebody can help as I've had a look online and can't find any clear answers.

Fitted a Pioneer head unit in to a civic mk8 (non-nav spec) at the weekend. Everything works except for the screen on the car that previously showed temp and clock and the steering wheel controls don't work either.

All the wiring is correct and plugged in and the steering control patch lead is correct. Any ideas? Do the plugs have to be plugged in, in a certain order? I've had that issue before on other cars. Could it be the black control box on the steering wheel control harness not working?
