After nearly 277,000 miles, the engine in my Accord Type-S has finally decided it needs a holiday..

I know it would be easier/quicker to throw another engine in, especially since it's already done 277k! But... Would it be worth having a go at rebuilding the bottom end?

I'm not too sure on the actual damage yet, but a few people have said it's definitely my big end that's gone. I don't know if the crank is scored, or if I can just get a way with new shells.

Bearing in mind, I'm a software developer not a mechanic laugh

Yes, I know it's just an Accord but the 2.4 Type S seem to be a bit thin on the ground (No 2.4s on Autotrader, 2 on eBay) and while I could get one that's done 70k miles for a few grand, I quite fancy a challenge!

Is your oil level ok, did you run it low? Also, when did you EML come on?

If it is bottom end knock your crankshaft will almost certainly be buggered and things will only get worse if you continue to use it.

Car isn't being used currently, don't fancy being in it when one of the conrods makes a break for freedom!

EML is unrelated, and it's P0420 Cat Efficiency - Pretty common with mega mileage cars.

Oil level is fine, but someone mentioned before that if the garage who did the timing chain last year weren't careful, the oil pickup could have been partially blocked by sealant.

That's one of the other things I'm thinking - They're only 5 minutes down the road from me, but just need to get a cost. Seen they can drop engines in Civics in a few hours!

Not sure whether it's worth chucking £1500 at a 277k car..

Well like you said, you could buy another for a grand, but then you have to ask yourself are you any better off doing that? At least with your current Accord, you've owned it a while (i assume) and know the car and how it's been treated. Personally, I would get it sorted if the rest of the car is up to an OK standard. Mileage only matters if the car has been neglected.
