Hello,

Been out a while and seen a few on the roads each day so interested in experiences from any owners of the current gen 10 Civic.

Looking at potentially getting the 1.5 petrol manual gearbox and keeping for a good few years so wonder what the experience of those who have one has been.

Honda reliability assured or is the reports of somewhat iffy build quality merited? I understand there have been some electrical issues - were these confined to the autos? I have come round to the styling which I know has been a topic of discussion before.

Does anybody know if the 1.5 has a timing chain rather than belt? Real world MPG?

Thanks in advance,

ninjag

I had a look at a few in the Honda showrooms when looking for a CRV, felt cheap inside and I can imagine the typical Honda cabin rattles and buzzing happening sooner than later.

There might be some useful info in this thread

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

The 1.5 turbo uses a timing chain. The 1.0 turbo uses a timing belt.

I came very close to buying one. The 1.5 turbo Sport Plus is a brilliant drive - the handling is incredible (it has adaptive suspension all round). But the interior felt rather cheap. I couldn't see myself living with it. It's a shame, because I love the design.

I believe that the current model will be replaced in 2021, and that - together with the closure of the Swindon factory - makes me think that there won't be a facelift.

I have the 1.5 sport plus and love it. Ok it doesn’t have the grunt of my 3.0 A6 oil burner, but it does go very well. Engine is a masterpiece, the Vtec is awesome.

It is averaging 43mpg to a tank which as I understand is a lot better than the 1.0 can achieve as that has to work harder.

Super quiet cruising, the tech is amazing, no rattles, loads of room.

Only gripe is cannot fit roof bars with pano roof and passenger seat is not height adjustable

I took delivery of a new 1.5 sport a week ago - it's a new company car replacing a three year old Golf 2.0tdi that I'd done 112k miles in.
I've done about a thousand miles in the Civic so far, and it's all good! My last Honda was a '92 Civic vti and this new one definitely has some familiarity - it wont rev to 8,500rpm like the vti did but it does have a limiter at 6,500rpm and hitting it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears is easily done if I'm not paying attention.

The acceleration is addictive and I have a feeling the intelligent speed re-stricter could come in handy.

Quality is different to the Golf, but I wouldn't describe it as feeling cheap - it feels Japanese I guess, the dash is much nicer than the Golf's. but the bodywork and the side skirts flex a bit more than I expected.

40+mpg should be achievable on an average run, if driven carefully and shifting gear before the engine really gets going I guess - but I'm only getting 38-39mpg so far.

This car is incredibly good fun to drive, has loads of room in it and has a decent boot (larger than the Golf had).

The 'Sport' feels like its aimed at the driver's experience and not so much the passenger's comfort, not having the sunroof means I can fit roof bars.

There are multiple factories around the world the make the Civic, it will just be supplied from elsewhere.

Back to the OP, if going for petrol... get the 1.5 over the 1.0. They get roughly the same MPG on motorways etc (around 45mpg), ignore the official spec.
They handle amazing, getting in and out of them is a bit of a task if that is the sort of thing that you look for haha. Easier to get into my Clio 182 because the Civic seats are so low!

I see 100's of these bad boys every day, so I may be biased wink

Hello,

I have the civic 1.5, I came from an FN2 type r, and I honestly think it's a lot better. The only thing I miss about the FN2 is the sound and the seats, but other than that, it's great.
I've had the car for over a year now but soon it's going back to honda to be traded in for an FK8. It's bittersweet because I've had a lot of memories in the car, and it's been the best car I've ever owned.

It's a shame that the saloon version doesn't come with the 1.5 turbo engine. Other markets get it, but we don't frown

That would be because the ones sold in the UK are made in Turkey, whereas the ones for the North American market are made in USA & Canada and therefore have their own variants.
