Hi all,

I've been looking at Accord Coupes from 1998-2001, specifically the V6 models. There seems to be very little information out there on these cars, but the package seems compelling, especially at sub-1k!

Owners seem to love them. I could accept the 25 mpg, maybe 30's on longer journeys - as the styling is just fantastic and I can't help but keep looking back at this one, might go and see it this week. Problem is my other half might kill me, but then again, it's a V6 Honda from an era of outstanding build quality, and I do trust the brand. And it is PURPLE. It just screams nineties!

If anyone has owned one of these and has any hints or advice on what to look for I'd appreciate it. May have to sacrifice my s2000 and free up some garage space and funds but the rarity and again the styling/v6/interior makes them seem a great weekend cruiser.

I'll be keeping an eye out for RUST for starters... it is coming up to 22 years old after all!

TIA!

These were made in the USA rather than Japan - they didn't sell at all well in RHD when new because they weren't as sporty as an Integra-R or as luxurious as a Legend.
Most parts should still be available as so many were sold in the USA where they were very successful, but RHD-specific parts may be more difficult.
If the car you are looking at is Midnight Pearl (PB-73P) then go for it! - it is a fantastic colour that was available on the NSX for a few years.

Go for it !
I have one and just sold my S2k last year.
Enjoyed mine for over two years now, just remember its not a sports car but it is definitely a capable cruiser.
Massive boot and good internal space with all the toys of the nineties....
Parts are fairly easy to get hold of, some via the States, body panels rare though.
Virtually nothing from the UK Accord fits either, completely unique car and rare too, less than 500 in the UK at the last count.

Check the exhaust , not many bits available and a stainless is probably noisy, these are very quiet cars but induction noise from the standard filter is excellent when " VTEC" comes in !

If you find a lot of rust , walk away, there are some cracking rust free cars around....pay a grand and you should get a good one with everything working. Prices from 500 to 2k are normal.

Have a search for the "h6nda " website....loads of info there and some serious long term and passionate owners !

indeed:

If it is the same colour as this one then it isn't the same as the NSX purple, but still a cool colour.

There is a whole section on the Accord Coupe on this website - thanks for pointing it out, I had no idea it existed:

Thanks guys, really helpful. Yes, the purple is a big appeal for me I must admit. I have a green s2000 - this lime colour was also an NSX option, but insanely rare. I really would like this car - now to justify it to SWMBO! ;D.

I'll have a look at this website. They seem fantastic value for the comfort, design cred, and for a nice under stressed V6. Lovely.

Hi. I owned one for a year. Used it as a daily. Had it LPG;ed too. I brought it with 40K on it (£1200) and did about 30K. Lovely cars. Most comfortable car Ive ever owned. Mine was a black 3.0 V6, with the honda body kit which really made it look sporty. Not quick by any means,
needs a turbo, but I loved it.

However.....

The automatic gearbox has a well know design fault. Mine started to slip at 50K, and it WILL need a rebuild. Well know issue, go check the US forums as like previously mentioned these were built in the US and sold far more there. Same issue with the Honda Odyssey. The clutches start to slip on 2/3rd. I tried to prevent it by regular gearbox oil changes but it eventually went. The gearbox has a certainly type of oil. Eventually I brought a 2rd hand box, had it fitted and sold the car as rebuild prices were 1600.

Thirsty as f**K. You wont get 30mpg. no chance. I was getting ...tops...26mpg and that was driving like Ms Daisy was in the back. This is why I LPG'ed it (2K conversion). With that I was seeing around 39/40 mpg.

As it was sold in low numbers parts are dealer / expensive. A large section of my exhaust went and I had to go to Honda due to limited blue print parts. Was over £1K.. Headlight bulbs on the nearside requires the headlight to come out.

Part of me wish I still had it, and had just had the gearbox rebuild. I loved it. Such a comfortable car. I now have a 1.6 Civic Coupe as a daily, which is too small but that's another story. It's an Auto. I brought this for £1400 with 11k on the clock. As it was a town car this too has a slight issue with 2 to 3rd gear. Not sure if Honda's make good automatic gearboxes, or are using poor standard ones.

The "design fault " is actually caused by zero maintenance, atf changes using a "Z1 " designated oil help tremendously.

I see 25mpg no problem with mixed driving plus 32mpg on long runs...and I don't know any Miss Daisy !!!! Think your problem on fuel consumption was that slipping clutch... having said that the car is well built and with 200bhp, 0-60 of about 8 seconds it will consume the jungle juice !

Exhaust replacement is a problem as you say but using a variety of after market parts it can be got round at a cost.

Parts can be bought from the States much more cheaply than from Honda dealers in the UK even when factoring in shipping and possible taxes.

There is no problem changing headlight bulbs on either side, nor side lights, without having to remove the headlight....just need a bit of dexterity, perseverance and have chiropractor on call !!!

The car is comfy, well appointed , seats four comfortably and has a big boot, great as a gt car..... don't forget that the youngest of these cars are now 17 years old...show me a car of that age , with all the toys of that era that costs so little to buy and is rare to boot with less than 500 still on the road.
