Change 1.6 civic diesel for 1.8 petrol
Discussion
Hi Guys,
We have been looking at a change of Civic we currently have a 2013 Civic 1.6 diesel with 70k on the clock full dealer service history but as we don't do the high mileage we bought the car for would it be a good idea to change up to a Civic EX with all whistle and bells, or stay with the diesel we have had and still get over 84mpg on a run and if driven like a granny I have had 98mpg (all be at about 2am on the motorway with no traffic to contend with) but 66mpg local driving town work.
What would if any benefits could we gain if we change to the 1.8 petrol. we have seen a rather nice 1.8 in sliver with low mileage.

I’ve just got the latest 1.5 vtec turbo petrol and love it. The tech in the car is amazing. It basically drives itself
It’s the first petrol I’ve had for years. Cruising around 80 on long trip I averaged 48mpg. I’m happy with that! I understand that the 1.5 in the real world is better than the 1.0vtec. I’m sure the diesel would be better on fuel but it’s not as good to drive

Hold on a minute...98mpg...I cant believe that...downhill with wind behind my M135i gets 999mpg though so thereWe have been looking at a change of Civic we currently have a 2013 Civic 1.6 diesel with 70k on the clock full dealer service history but as we don't do the high mileage we bought the car for would it be a good idea to change up to a Civic EX with all whistle and bells, or stay with the diesel we have had and still get over 84mpg on a run and if driven like a granny I have had 98mpg (all be at about 2am on the motorway with no traffic to contend with) but 66mpg local driving town work.

The 1.8 petrol is quite thirsty. Had to be pushed hard to get even a remote bit of fun out of it and bang goes your economy. I'd keep your diesel. Well be bit the bullet and bought the Civic 1.8 SR auto full leather, sun roof, sat nav, heated seats, electric lumber adjustments rear tints, low profile tyres low mileage, full service history. In silver metallic. Loving it so far
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the 1.8 as I'm thinking of making the same change. That sounds like a great spec car. How much did you get it for if you don't mind me asking?

I have a 1.8i with the 5 speed auto. fuel economy is around 42 mpg with my mixed commute driving, on a run I've comfortably obtained 45-46 mpg. The auto box is alright, but the gearing is quite looooooooonnnnng - second gear is a similar ratio to what third gear was in my old 1.6i civic sport. In any case, I got it because I wanted a car that was comparatively simple compared to more modern turbo charged units (the 1.8i engine is the R series which dates back to 2006 - my father has a 2006 civic with the same engine - manual transmission - and the engine is a peach).
It's not bad, it's pretty consistent with fuel economy albeit a bit of a lazy engine due to that gearing. I dont know how the 6-speed manuals are but they might be more fun to drive if the gearing is shorter in the lower gears.

Interested to hear of your ownership experience with the diesel one tbh... Just this very morning I had a browse of potential new sheds as I sometimes do and tidy 2003/4 1.7 diesels (assuming that's 1698cc?) are £500 for a tidy one with sensible miles...
Hi My car was a 10 plater Civic we found the car was the usual Honda comfort and reliability the engine had loads of torque and the fuel consumption was the best I have had better than the company cars I used to have (Ford Mondeo, S max and Vauxhall Zafira diesels) better by a long chalk I was continually getting high 70mpg and one occasion I did get 100 mpg bring like a granny on motorways. But got pulled by the police for that asking what was wrong, izzybella said:

Ummmm were you perhaps driving a bit slow?Sometimes I se people on the motorway doing 50 mph (or less!) when there are not speed restrictions, it's a bit dangerous as it is a massive difference in speed.
Mind you, around 50 mph seems to the be optimum speed for max fuel efficiency in a honda. Used to get 50 mpg from my old 1.6 civic if I could sit at 50 mph
