So I'm looking at a car to buy in the future and I'm really impressed by the ep3. The only problem is that, I've seen audi S3's do the quarter mile in ~12.6 in stock form and that's seriously quick. was just wondering if anyone has raced S3's in their ep3's and how much difference there is between them in terms of straight line speed. ofc, the s3 has an edge in the quarter mile because of its AWD and also the automatic gearbox. how much bhp would it take for an ep3 to beat an s3?

You’re comparing a 13+ year old FWD NA hatch with a much much newer, AWD Turbo hatch. The S3 will win in most scenarios.

I think I’d give one a run with my EP3, but I reckon an s3 would have the advantage off the line. Mine is running 357bhp.

what if you were racing from a roll at let's say 20mph? I was under the impression that an ep3 with 300+bhp would leave an s3 for dead except off the line.

I’d say so, I reckon the S3 probably has a 200kg+ weight penalty and the way the EP3 picks up revs is very impressive

As with all of this is virtually impossible to say for sure, I wouldn’t be scared of taking on an S3 from a rolling start, I reckon he’d be more comfortable at higher speeds than I would be though hehe

I was watching this. a 300hp ep3 taking a 400bhp golf r. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GDBCnrtdgyl , is that actually how quick a 300bhp ep3 is?

No video, how quick a 300hp ep3 is depends if it's NA, turbo, supercharged and what gear ratios/final drive it has.

Why are you not considering a FK2 type r or fd2.

well what's the benefits of an FK2 or Fd2 vs an ep3. ep3 is lighter and cheaper and has a k20. that's the only reason I want an ep3

Seems pretty fair, I reckon the EP3 will have a higher rev range and longer rations to exploit. Mine makes peak power at 7880 RPM and is geared for somewhere like 170mph which with 300+bhp is probably doable (but likely quite scary)

Civics have short/low gears an use high revs to achieve better torque to the wheels

Shorter gearing makes them even more mental, I'd like a jdm gearbox with the shorter 3rd>6th an 5.1fd as I see no point in gearing for 170mph.

Best thing my mates have done to their rotrex'd ep3s is Reduce the gearing, mad acceleration to 150mph at max rpm in 6th is plenty and means more time in 3rd 4th an 5th on track which is much better.

If you go on track hehe

Mines a road only car, I drive at 80mph up and down dual carriageways and the gearing already annoys me, shorter gearing would only annoy me more I think.

Horses for courses and all that. smile

The Jap market Fd2 Civic is in my opinion the ultimate type r, NA engine, rrc inlet and other tricks to make it the most powerful factory k20 connected to a lsd equipped close ratio gearbox. Combined with a chassis offering double wishbone all round, much stiffer than an ep3, better weight balance, much more potential to develop.

FYI I have a ep3 for the last year and I do realllly enjoy it, the engine is a gem, the Honda is exactly what I needed after a few years of having rwd barges.

I do find it has floors, the eps an non centering steering takes a bit of getting used to, without upgraded springs/arb I felt the back end suffered badly from body roll an you can tell there isn't a huge range of motion available once you start hitting cambered sweeping corners an dips! Mine is on eibach pro springs an jdm arb.

I'd highly recommend one to anyone, have you considered a JDM EP3? You get some good upgrades over a UKDM one
