Driving home (from American Speedfest at Brandshatch 😍) crossing a roundabout went to change gear and couldn’t get into one! So obviously lost power and it was a big drama with blues and twos due to location 🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyway, it would move into position if the engine was off but turn it on and it made a horrid grinding noise, if in neutral when turned on you couldn’t get it into any gear.

So few questions...

Does that sound like the clutch?
What would be a reasonable quote?
Is it worth doing when it’s 12 years old with 170k miles on the clock?

So far it’s been a dream (had it for 7 years) it’s flown through every MOT only ever needing brakes or tyres. Last year it cut out on me and needed a small plug thing replacing but that’s it. Oh and my left indicator is a bit temperamental. I’m inclined to think it’s worth it and I have 4 kids, 3 in car seats so need the space.

Would really appreciate any advice though as I’m a single woman and have had some not nice experiences at garages in my time! Thank you!

Yes- sounds like a friction disc failure

The horrible grinding/scraping noise is likely to be parts of the clutch rubbing against the flywheel.

Cost depends on what clutch you use & who fits it.....

Assuming the flywheel is ok, a replacement clutch might be around £400. Insist they check everything (including the clutch fork, and the ball it pivots on) as if anything else is still bad after it's been put back together then it'll need to all come apart again etc etc. They should replace the gearbox oil at this time too.

I'd wager that if the car is otherwise in good condition, then there's no worry with fixing it (a clutch is a wear item anyway!) and carrying on. A replacement vehicle would cost far far more! I've got a 13 year old honda civic, which has some silly little electrical bits every now and then but aside from that it;s still a solid car for all I need it for. Run them into the ground, then get another!

Clutch kits (genuine honda parts) can be obtained from Cox Honda (the link below is for the FRV)

I've used them routinely for servicing parts (including a clutch kit!).
