Hi all,

Have a small knocking coming from the steering in the car, sounds the same as it does in this video https://youtu.be/OAMqrL14ewo thinking it may be steering rack slider? Any help locating the source of the noise would be appreciated.

Cheers.

So lets go.

I've just recently had a 2006 EP3 with the same issue, Was a well maintained car which was used on track too.

I replaced ball joints, TRE's, Drop links, Front arm bushes, Steering rack slider, new BC coilovers, subframe collars and knock/rack play still remained.

I never got to the source of the problem, But my next venture was looking at the back lash between the rack and the pinion or get mine stripped and refurbished by a reputable company, There is so much mis-information on the internet regarding these knocks. I found it best to avoid most.

This thread is also interesting https://type-r-owners.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?...

When you jacked my car up at one side, and moved the suspended wheel quarter to three, You could feel play and see the middle of rack moving up and downward, Taking up the slack.

It always sounded like it was from the passenger side on my car (Probably middle), and was worse over sharp, rough ground at low speeds. Hollow clunk sort of noise.

As I said, I never got the bottom of it because the car is now sadly a CATB. I do have a fresh JDM import version now and the rack is good in this car, I put it down to our terrible roads, too.

Long story short, I wish I forked out £3-400 to get a fresh rack fitted and started from there. I planned to buy another rack for around £50 and send that to get overhauled keeping my car on the road. I would use a specialist company directly if possible vs. generic motorfactor parts who often can't assure you that you'll even get a Type R rack back.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping the rack itself wasn’t going to be the problem but never mind! Best get searching for a replacement....
