The missus has a Civic 1.6 SE auto (mk6 I think, about '01 - high roof line thing).

I noticed off-throttle, on the flat it's pushing 30+mph sometimes. I put it in neutral and sure enough, idle was about 1200rpm.

Took it to local garage for diagnostic, but they just told her its just high idle when cold (it isn't!).

Tonight Ive noticed the temp gauge is all over the place, usually lower than normal, sometimes barely off the stop when on a long downhill off-throttle.

Putting 2+2, could it be the thermostat that's gone, and so the engine is running cold and being over-fuelled? If so, is it an easy fix?

Not sure where the thermostat is on these engines but on the EP3 it's in the front of the engine in an awkward place.

As long as you can find where it is, they're a dead easy fix and yes that's probably the issue with the temperature (and may be causing the idle issue)

I'd fix that first and see how you get on, then there is the IACV (idle air control valve) which I'm sure these engines have too which may need cleaning/replacement.

Thanks - the thermostat seems to be fairly easy to replace : it's on the front of the engine, off-side.

I'll get a new one and see if it has any effect.
