Civic type R buying advice.
Discussion
Hi folks. A quick post here to get some opinions. I may have the option to purchase a 55 plate civic type R that belongs to my wife's best friend.
She is getting a brand new mini in september and this has to go. The car is a 2005 and in a mid mettalic grey. It has been owned by her since new and covered 36000 miles. Cosmetically its perfect not a mark on it but it isn't perfect. There seems to be a problem with the starter motor sticking and it's due a couple tyres.
My questions are is there anything I should be looking for and what kind of value would a car like this have. Thanks in advance.

Well i would probably put servicing as top priority when looking for bits, altho its not done the miles it will still need all the different services done too it.
Other than that there isnt much to go wrong, mines not cost me anything over standard maintenance.
If she hasn't driven it hard it may feel a bit limp. If you get a drive get it nice and warm 10-15 mins driving then don't be afraid to get it some welly.

Hi chaps. I have been up and had a look and it was even better than I had hoped for.
A couple of stone chips on the leading edge of the bonnet and one on the lower spoiler. One wheel has very light kerbing the other three are perfect. The rest of the paint is like new. The bald tyres have been replaced for new which is a positive. The interior is the same. No marks or wear on the seats. I was staggered. They explained to me about the starter motor and it's an occasional problem in cold weather, so not a big head ache.
Anyway it's not all champagne and strawberries. The mot is very short lived but I don't see any issues on that front. Also the service is due but on the plus side every stamp up until now is present and all from the local Honda dealer. Mass of receipts and MOT certificates.
However I do have I question you might be able to help with. I think it might be a premier edition but I'm not sure how to tell.
It has red recaro seats and a momo steering wheel. I am told there are some head rests upstairs in a box that were taken out the first day they bought it home and haven't been fitted since.
Any pointers you could give evidence me would be really helpful.
Thanks guys.

Sounds like it to me, I guess it depends on how much you want to pay for it... yes its a good one but do you want to pay top whack for one?
I'd ask them to give you a price and go from there. Does it have A/C?

I have heard something to do with 'pre facelift' and 'facelift' model CTR. What are the differences?
The facelift model was introduced in 2004. There are roughly 1500 changes, however the main ones are:
Lighter flywheel.
Additional sound deadening.
Different front and rear light clusters.
Different front bumper.
Red door inserts and red inserts on the seats.
Also a late run of Premier model CTR's became available on top of the facelift spec the following were included:
Black and red Recaro seats
Momo steering wheel
Red carpet
Tinted windows
Type R embossed brake calipers

We have talked money already and price wise it seems competitive, I'm getting it for the same price a local trader offered for it. Having tried to compare like for like on Autotrader it is around 1500-2000 cheaper than traders would want for a car of similar age and mileage.
Yes it does have AC and I checked it was working last night.
Thanks for the info as well, Martin, much appreciated.

On average I do about 7000-8000 miles a year so milage isn't really an issue.
At the minute I have a 2.5 jaguar x type so this should be cheaper to run, hopefully.
I haven't driven this one yet (I wanted to get past the first viewing stage) but high revving/low torque is what floats my boat.
I have had a 1987 MR2 AW11 since 2001 and this, I would imagine, behave similarly. That has a distinct power change at 4800 when the tvis cuts in.

The starter motor thing is very common.
It sticks for a half second after starting, in my experience it doesn't happen every single time more like 20% of the time in cold winter weather and only for the first start of the day when its been left overnight.
I am happy to ignore it on the odd occasion it happens, my EP3 is 12 years old, I bet it's done it since near new.
