Hey all

I've just purchased a HONDA CIVIC 1.6 i-VTEC Sport 3 door and im really confused on what oil to use, some recommend 10w40, some 5w30

I checked on opie oils website and they recommend 0w30, any other EP2 owners out there that can help me with this. I was meaning to get the oil changed soon and really confused on what oil to use

any help would be much appreciated

I use 0/30 . But thats the ep3 type r .

A decent synthetic is what your after. Any oils better than no oil.

I have the same car. I use 5w30. I did have one fill of 10w 40 but found a loss in fuel economy. Remember the lower number refers to the cold viscosity and the lower limit; in this country, we dont get well into negative figures, so a 0w or a 5w wont make too much differeance but the upper number (the viscosity when up to temp) will have more of an effect on engine power and efficiency.

I would also recommend a gearbox oil change; honda specify 27,000 miles if you tow regularly or are in hot countries - i suspect neither applies to you but if its got over 50,000 miles it might be a good idea (i changed mine and it seemed underfilled from what came out). Cam belt is 75,000 miles or 8 years.

Castrol Edge 5w30 fully synthetic in mine.

Also used GTX 10w40 a couple of years ago. No noticeable difference between the 2 in terms of economy or performance, but GTX was half the price of Edge!

Thanks for your response everyone , much appreciated

I got in touch with Opie oils and got some really good advice from Tim, he explained that 0w-30 is the standard choice for the 1.6 vtec also if it burns oil then 5w40 is recommended. I wasn't really sure if it burns oil as ive just purchased the car but will keep a look out for this, ive ordered 0w30 FUCHS TITAN SUPERSYN LONGLIFE FULLY SYNTHETIC.

Ill have a look at the gearbox oil change as mine has just reached 74k miles, but the car comes with tons of history as it was really look aftred by the previous owner and the cambelt and water pump was all done at 70k miles.

Thanks for your reply
