Hi all

I've had my li'l Y reg Honda Civic for four years, the gearbox started getting noisy a couple of years ago and a couple of weeks ago it gave up the ghost!!

I lost second and fifth gears but managed to get to work with 1st, 3rd and 4th, on my way home it started jumping out of 3rd, I took the car to the local garage the next day and it was jumping out of all the gears as I got there!!

The lad removed the box a few days later to find that there was a hole and a crack in the casing!!

It seems that when the bearing collapsed, one of the balls got in tio the gearing and it was fired out at speed which holed the casing and cracked also frown

been without a car now for two weeks and I hate all the walking biggrin

The repair company that's overauling the box said they had a couple of casings knocking about but it seems to be taking ages!! The mechanic said that he hoped it would have been returned by now irked

The car has never broken down or let me down in any way, gone through every MoT test so I can't complain! I should have taken it in though when I had some spare holiday days at work!! now it's going to cost £150 more!!

She's an ugly bu**er but I can't wait to get her back biggrin

One of few of Honda's weak points (as well as thin paint, and rusty arches wink ) is the gearboxes.

Question though, why get it rebuilt when a 2nd hand one from ebay would be cheaper, surely? Must be a lot cheaper that way!

As you said, the gearbo is a weak point (My lad had the same model but two years younger, his box was noisy too!)

I may have been buying a second hand box that was almost as bad as mine and would have gone 'bang' withing a few months frown

It's costing £400 for the overhaul/refitting so it's not all that much more than I was looking at on fleabay wink

You should kill two birds with one stone and get yourself a Type R. That way you get a decent gearbox (when warm) and a new car! laugh

My daughter in law bought a new type R, she had to add a pint of oil to the engine every month yikes

She didn't know at first and by the time it was checked, the sump was almost dry!!rage
