EP3 can't find source of rattle/knock
Discussion
Hi all,
I have a strange metallic rattle/knock and I can't find the source of it, its almost of hollow sort of noise that happens with the slightest bump and the biggest bump, its really only noticable with the window open, the best way to descipe it is like driving over a loose drain...
I've done the drop links and the heat shield. I found a strut infront of the radiator which had rusted off at the bottem so I drilled and bolted that (really thought that would be the source but it wasn't!) still no luck.
I've been under the car and tapped everything I can but still can't locate it.
Any ideas?
Craig

I've heard many people mention the heat shield can rattle on the exhaust ?
People seem to just take it off, although i've never had a problem with mine
I actually had a rattle on the heat shield around the drive shaft which I resolved, although I didn't remove it, I could remove it just to rule it out.People seem to just take it off, although i've never had a problem with mine
I tapped all of the heat shields around the exhaust and nothing moved or made a noise.
From the sound, I would guess the source of the rattle is heavier than a heat shield, it doesn't sound 'tinny' at all.
Remove the driveshaft heat shield next time you get a chance. If that is not the source of the rattle, you can be sure it will rattle again at some point in the future. It's not even necessary, iirc it was suggested that it was fitted to protect the passenger side drive shaft during the big mileage testing during the cars development, but it's not necessary for road use, there isn't one of the driver's side either.
I know it sounds really simple but I found my space saver wheel was not sat right in the boot and was making a 'metal on metal' type knocking sound over bumps... It was doing my head in
I could hear it with and without the window being open and sounded a lot louder than I would have thought. May be worth a check?!

Another one to try is one I have been trying to locate for the past week...and have finally found it. Get into your back seats and where you have the plastic bit on the seat belt, tap that against the side under the window.
Due to the lack of sound proofing, when it bangs it creates a metallic knocking sound. And due to its location and the way it hangs, it practically sits on the plastic banging all the time.
Quick fix, small self adhesive foam pads on the side of the seatbelt buckle

The steering rack is a primary culprit for this kind of rattling/knocking. The bush (and the rack housing itself) in the the sliding assembly that the inner track rod ends screw into can wear and allow the assembly to pivot up and down slightly. Try jacking the car up on one side and manually applying pressure to the wheel at 9 o-clock and 3 o-clock positions whilst watching the rack, if it's worn you will see it moving up and down.
The heatshields tend to make a much harsher, higher frequency vibration rather than the hollow knock you get from suspension components.
