Been looking at these which appear to get great economy for a 1.8 petrol. How good are they in the real world?

Its this shape I am considering:

You should get between 35-40 depending on driving.

When ever I get in one to take someone on a test drive the mpg average is always on that. New shape only gets 45 on a good run.

Thanks for the response, looks like the Honda forum isn't too busy, expected a few more owner opinions.

I have that exact model (07 in silver) and find that the OBC gives me low to mid 40s on a motorway run with cruise control set to mid 70s. I dont commute so the car rarely goes through a tank of petrol without a decent motorway run and its very rare that we get below mid to high 30s average.

Excellent, thanks for your response. Certainly seem very frugal, just need to get a test drive to see if I like them and what the performance is like, especially with the VTEC engine as I imagine you have to rev quite hard to get the most out of it.

Yup, the v-tec window doesnt start until 4,800 and drops off quite a lot after mid 6k, it wont be as noticable as other higher output engines though. It does seem very frugal for the size of the engine and weight of the car, with the caveat that I rarely get out of the 2-4k rpm zone.

I wouldnt discount getting a type R though, I wish I had and the garage that I bought it from had taken the type S as a trade in for a type R.

Edit: forgot about this page- if your interested http://asia.vtec.net/Engines/RiVTEC/

VTEC is only at light load when the throttle plate opens and the limited valve opening reduces pumping losses and controlling engine power. It's nothing like a typical VTEC engine really.

I've covered just over 2k miles, all town driving, get 27-30mpg.

Run to a Newcastle at motorway speed showed 52 mpg on dash, worked out around 48 real, impressive!

We took the latest gen Civic 1.8 with 6 speed box and start stop to Le Mans last year and with 3 adults and a fully loaded car averaged a calculated 47mpg, very impressive imo.
