Hi - quick query to the experts..

My s2000 came fitted with a K&N air filter. No details about when fitted or what model

Questions

does it ever need replacing or servicing and if so how often?

should I run it with the airbox lid on or off when such a filter is fitted? Obv airbox off gives you delicious noise but can cause heat soak with OEM fittings - but is this the case with an aftermarket K&N also?

(I track it , so it gets spanked, so dont want to spoil engine for the sake of a bit of fun noise if it's not a good idea)

Running the airbox lid off won't damage the engine, or at least shouldn't as you still have the air filter covering the intake pipe. K&N filters do need to be cleaned every now and then, you can buy cleaning kits from K&N themselves, I think I also saw them at Halfords last time I was in. Easy and quick job.

Heatsoak should not be an issue, some people talk about "decrease power when driving in traffic", but how often do you need VTEC power or speed in a traffic jam? Once you are moving, you should have plenty of cold air flowing into the engine bay, so I wouldn't worry about heatsoak.

If it's the standard airbox and a K&N filter you won't be seeing any real power gains, or improvements in throttle response over the standard item. You may want to look into the proper induction kit options for the car, as there is some tasty kit out there for the S2000.
