Civic Brake Issues

Not sure if this is a make specific issue but thought I'd post in here as it's a Honda.
If I depress the brake pedal slowly I get ZERO braking, it travels all almost completely to the floor and then at the end I get what I assume is non-assisted braking where it the brakes lock almost instantly (I assume this is mechanical only, it feels the same as when I'd try to roll the car back and brake while the engine was off >on previous motor<).
HOWEVER. If I push quickly and firmly I get a touch of travel and then the assist kicks in and the brakes work fine.
Any Ideas? Thought I'd ask on here before taking it to the mechanics simply as the brakes do work they're just inconvenient and uncomfortable for passengers...
