Thinking back to when I bought my EP2 last year, I remember looking at one of these on eBay. A quick search now shows that they're few and far between, and when I mentioned it to a fellow EP Civic owner, he wasn't even aware they were ever produced.

Was there something so terrible about these that it put people off them? Performance wise they're very similar to the far more popular EP2 and look just as smart so fundamentally they can't have been too bad...

And finally, where did that 1.7 engine come from? Why did they not just use the 1.6 from the EP2? So many unanswered questions confused

If I end up changing my Civic any time soon, I'd be quite tempted by one of these...

These were really popular in the north american market, and the 1.7 was used on the later fn civics there as well. They are an excellent ride. Honda UK has done some very odd things over the years - hardly any EG hatches/coupe, but offered that 4 door aerodeck monstrosity instead. Then when the FN came out in 2007 they didnt offer the very very attractive coupe 2 door, only the 3 door which is hideous (IMO).

Apparently Brits hate 2 doors and love 3 doors?

They do have a sort of American car look about them... If that makes sense. Didn't know about the engines, so that explains a bit.

Surprising that more over here don't prefer coupes, unless it's only Honda that think that. They 2007 coupe IMO looks very smart, but probably isn't as practical as the hatch for the masses.

The gold ones don't look great, but get one in nighthawk black (ignoring the dated looking rear lights) and they are a decent looking car IMO.

I liked mine. Not quick, but couldn't insure anything quick at the time. Fitted Work alloys and KW coilovers, so it at least handled reasonably well.

I mate of mine who used to work for Honda also had one, and reckoned that Honda only ever sold about 600 in the UK.

The EM2 didn't have a lot going for it TBH.

Styling isn't great. The 1.7 VTEC isn't a particularly fantastic engine either.

They have some nice options but aren't desirable at all..

True enough. The engine wasn't great, but styling is subjective and I liked it at the time. Seems I was in the minority though, certainly.

The D17 is effectively just a longer stroke version of the D16. It makes a useful amount of extra power and torque over the D16 in the EP2, perhaps they felt the coupe needed a bit of extra performance over the 1.6 shopping car?

Is the 1.7 the same engine that comes in the FRV? If so it's got a cambelt, so it's something worth checking out if you buy one - it was another reason I went for the 2 ltr FRV.

Same engine, but the cam belt is a piece of cake to change on them.

I was going to upgrade to one, I have the EK from the year before. I test drove one but loosing the double wishbone suspension means it handles no where as well as it's predecessor. The styling didn't change enough either. I didn't think it was worth the extra £

There was a lot of criticism about the 7th gen Civic moving to McPherson struts when it came out, but there is no doubting that they still handle very well, especially the EP3 Type R. If there is a single criticism I have of the 7th gen Civic it's the poxy electric power steering, which is the worst of any car I have ever driven. The steering was dead when new, but with age the worm and wheel can tighten up to the point where the car won't even self center properly and it makes it awful to drive.

At least the DC5 used a proper hydraulic setup.

FIRST POST!! Well this is my one and I have to say it's a great car... The previous owner had it professionally lowered and put a rather nice sounding stainless exhaust on it too (which makes it even more rare as these are usually just standard in the UK)The handling is excellent. Engine is OK performance wise as it is still a VTECH but it's nothing compared to the Civic Coupe VTI I had previously... I am now considering upgrading to an Integra Type R DC3 mainly due to the engine not being quite enough for me biggrin ....

The EM2 is a good base for a project car. I know a few folk that have carried out K20 swaps with impressive results.

I don't have the skills to do an engine swap... also going to sell mine at some point so will need a buyer who doesn't get a shock when they lift the bonnet lol
