Got 2010 CRV 2.2 TD 59,000 miles with manual gearbox purchased from Honda dealership Jan 2013 - in recent weeks changing both up or down into 2nd gear is increasingly difficult and not as smooth as other gears. Definite reluctance to engage gear cleanly. Initial return to dealership under 12 month used warranty and after 2 days and cold start assessment informed 'characteristic' of gearbox. Anyone with any similar difficulties / issues and how'd you get on? Rapidly losing faith in what I believed would be a reliable main family car.

"characteristic" was what Weston-super-Mare Honda termed the steering kick-back on the 2008 CR-V I nearly bought from them. It's known to be caused by the 4wd system getting gunked-up, so I expected it to be fixed before purchase, but they decided otherwise. So I sympathise...does sound like Honda dealers are getting worse.
(Had a real argument getting my deposit back too)

Take it up with Honda UK - there are some good people there. It sounds like a possible synchro issue to me.
Also check on the CR-V owners forums (US and the UK sub-forum of (I think) Civinfo), see if it's common or not and what the considered causes are.

Alternatively, does it only do it when cold? E46 M3 gearboxes won't go into 2nd when cold, and that IS a characteristic, apparently.

This is not usually the gearbox itself. ask them to try and swap the gear lever mechanism off another newer car first. when i have done this it usually sorts the problem. then they can go from there. just take it back to the dealer im sure it wont be a problem. this could be normal for this car.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the CRV owners forum, plenty of useful info - will continue to pursue with dealer as after phone call to Honda UK they are referring us back via dealer etc., hopefully not going to develop into a stalemate situation...

I`ve recently used the Honda customer services for a problem on my CR-V (driveshaft issue).

Firstly you need the support of the dealer. Honda CS will talk to the dealer and then you. I`m shocked that your dealer doesn`t think there`s a problem with your car, in my experience Honda dealers are generally good.

Is there another Honda franchise near you that you can take your car to?

In my case Honda UK contributed £700 towards the cost of new driveshafts on my CR-V despite it being 5 years old.

Agree with above - I emailed Honda CS through their website, they called me then called the dealer and told them to sort it.

Hello,
I've been driving a 2009 CRV CDTi and suffering the same problem for the past 80,000 miles as my dealer said it was the way they're built to handle the torque from the engine! I've not enjoyed a single moment of driving the car as a result but I've not had a failure of any sort. Maybe they're right but the gear change is too clunky and it's always felt like there's been clutch drag but they say it's fine.

Hi,

I bought a used CRV with 29000 on the clock from a local main dealer 18months ago. A week or so later I found the change into 2nd and the fact that it wouldn't sometimes go into 1st at all, totally unacceptable.

After a lot of discussion and been told that it is a "characteristic" and then the linkage and gearbox oil being changed as a "trial"....all of corse to no avail, I wrote and rejected the car. Eventually, after been much more assertive than I felt necessary they agreed to change the synchro on 1st and 2nd.

The box is still notchy and not effortless, but with a sympathetic approach to gear change I can make it work!

Apart from host I love the car ....I wonder if the new manual box is any better?

UPDATE: Thanks for additional comments quite a common Honda 'characteristic' then! Having been through similar steps to improve the gear change etc etc there was no sustained improvement and we eventually agreed a price at which the Dealer bought the vehicle back. The Dealership were very professional and I got the distinct impression that Honda were the barrier to a more effective long term solution but that is merely my perception. It's a shame as I really liked the car, very practical and comfortable family wagon that had great load capacity etc but that matters not if its not a great or reliable drive! A radical change now as a VW Golf GTI has now become the family run-a-round and so far is proving to be great fun!
