Hopefully picking up a 1.4 Honda civic on thursday (assuming I pass test, tomorrow.)

It's an EK9 Model- Completely un-abused example with low mileage and completely standard.

I've wanted a civic for a while now and was just wondering how much of a difference is there between the 1.4 to the 1.5?

I would ideally prefer a 1.5 due to the VTEC and as they are an economy edition.

I would like to lightly modify the civic, but not sure I will be doing so until I have my first year of no claims. (Declaring mods would take insurance from £1350 to £4900)- Is there any way to get cheaper insurance with declared modifications?
I'm not looking to build a ricer image car, just something that looks good and sounds nice (the extra speed from the 1.5 would be nice aswell.)

Should I go ahead and buy the 1.4? Or wait for a clean 1.5 too come along.

Cheers

For reference a 1.4 circa year 2000 Civic is an EJ9, the EK9 is the 1.6 Type R import.

Both cars are easily maintained and modifiable, parts between each variant of that age can be had easily and are nearly all interchange able. Check Civiclife.net.

If you are planning to do an engine conversion in the future to one with Vtec and Dual over head cams I would recommend the 1.5 as it already has the correct looms to accept Vtec engine. The 1.4s don't.

Other than a small amount of power and the Vtec, there will not be much difference between the two models as they are both lower end of the spectrum cars. Both have rear drum brakes, I believe 242mm front disks come with both.

Take a look on the forum I quoted above, you should get a good insight into different aspects of the EJ9 (1.4) and EK3 (1.5)

Go for what suits you best, you only start learning to drive after you have passed and its going to be copious amounts of fun whatever engine you have.

I bought one of these as my first car and still have it just over a year on, my insurance was just over £1700 for the first year and has now dropped to just over £900 after getting some no claims. It's worth shopping around insurers as I managed to get on a policy where any aesthetic modifications made no difference to the premium!

As far as performance is concerned, it's a 1.4 so it's not exactly lightning but that said, all I have done with mine is an exhaust and induction kit and it's surprisingly faster than the 1.6 EP2 civic. Largely I guess due to the fact it doesn't weigh all that much.

One thing I would say though is to make sure you have a really good look underneath any civic you look at from this era as they're getting on a little bit, mostly the rear arches etc.

Good cars, but do a good check for rust, it's their biggest issue. You might have to search a bit longer for a good 1.5, bit rarer than the 1.4. Have you got a quote with the admiral/elephant group They have good prices and mods are cheap with them.

Thanks for responses! I bought a 1.4 1998 Reg. Had only done 46k from new and apart from a few small marks was clean!
What insurance company did you use @HayesEK? £1700 sounds good!
