Alright lads, I inherited my grandad's 92 civic 1.5L petrol automatic with 44k miles. When I turn the key it starts, goes up to about 1.5k rpm and then dies (engine off and dash lights die for a few seconds also). BUT if i give the right pedal a little attention and rev the car it fires up and runs perfectly.
A few google and youtube searches have yielded two possible fixes and i wanted to see what you guys had to say.

Rough jist:
1 = "You're supposed to rev the engine that's how an automatic choke works you muppet!" - Now i've not hand an automatic before so i wouldn't know if that's correct or not.

2 = "Fuel injectors need cleaning/changing." - Wouldn't know where those are.

I should say i'm not that mechanical i felt proper manly just getting the bonnet up, couldn't figure it out (because i know nothing about it) and gave maself a celebratory cup of tea.

Thanks for any/all help. smile

Might be better off posting in the Honda section, more Honda knowledgable bods prowl that area at least.

Alternatively Google some Civic owners clubs, preferably ones that aren't occupied with Barry types.

All the best with it, but maybe a basic service to start with, plugs, leads, oil, filters etc.

If it's a pre catalyst carburettor model then a few pumps of the accelerator are nothing to worry about. All your doing is squirting a bit of petrol in using the accelerator pump attachment on the carb. If it has an auto choke check this is working; if not replace. In addition if it's stalling the idle speed could be a tad low so fiddle with that. If not the idle mixture could be out; but it's probably tamper proof on a car of that age.

1.5l engine of a '92 car should be injection not carb.

Not familiar with that particular engine but I would start by checking the idle control valve and then throttle body adjustment. Had a similar problem with a Celica before and cleaning the idle control valve and throttle body with carb cleaner fixed it.

It's fuel injected (I'm pretty sure anyway).

I took it to show a mechanic really quickly to get an idea of what might be wrong and wouldn't you know it fired up each time with no trouble... As soon as i left the problem came back. Just my luck.

Good thing to know it can start up properly, now just need to either find out what the issue is and fix it or have someone in the car who i've told it doesn't work so it can show me up and start fine every time.
