Currently running a Fiesta ST with a few mods but looking for something a bit more rare and fun. A CR-X has popped up near me for £1400. Its a white 1.6 VTi Mk2.

From the pictures it looks it good condition, a bit of rust around the arches but seems to be common on what I've been reading on the owners club.

Just wondering as I'm not mechanically minded would this be a reliable purchase and would it be much different from my ST speed/handling wise?

VTi? Can't remember there being one of those... it's been a while though. I think you have VTec/non-VTec/SiR models. If you post a picture it's easy to indentify which it is.

They're a lot of fun and mine was bulletproof other than the heating going and a chip needed re-soldering. Personally I think going back to that age of car from an ST would be a mistake, I've been there and you miss modern motoring after a while. Depends what you're after really.

Check under the boot carpet, ensure it's all solid.

OK....Main issue will be rust..
Sill covers - often theres no sill left underneath!
Rear wheel arches - rot horrendously check the entire arch. A tiny scab above the rear bumper can be a rusty hole underneath.
Most of the metalwork is no longer available and companies like Hadrians didnt (when I did mine) have the right parts so you have to mod Civic DX parts (Door skins fit and rear arches off the 3dr can be modded)

CV joints clicking on full lock at low speed.
Sticking handbrake mechanism - costly rebuild or new calliper.

Cambelt/water pump - when last changed?
If it has ABS theres a hose to the accumulator that should be changed every 60k/5 yrs.

Service parts are still available - not too pricey. I stripped mine out and caged it. Its non-vtec and weights 830kgs. Immense fun on a dry day - not so on a wet one as theres no heater to clear the screen - fog-x saves the day!

Thanks for all the info, looked into it and decided against it, going to up the budget and look around for a decent 1, preferably from the owners club.

I had a 1.6 many moons ago & it was a superb car. Handles well, nice low driving position, and now quite rare. If it were me and try and spend a bit more and get a vtec one though as it does have that bit more punch over the 1.6
