I currently own a facelift Type R Ep3 which I love. When it eventually comes to moving on or if possible getting a second car I can't help but be interested in the Type R FD2. I'd love to hear from owners/people who have driven them/people who know about them.

I also have some questions as I'm generally interested:

1) Are insurance premiums higher on imported cars? (as Ep3 insurance for a 21 year old is already laughably high, though of course by the time I come to considering a FD2 I'll be older)

2) Purely speculative; but what do you think will happen to FD2 prices? More or less sit where they are because of the rarity factor?

3) Do you think on the road you can get significantly more enjoyment out of an FD2 than a EP3 or Integra DC5?

4) Do you have a Fd2? You you live in the South East? When are you taking me for a spin?

Cheers

My old boss has a blue fd2 he used to have a modified dc5. The fd is just as stiff as the dc5 was (dc5 had tien coilovers fd2 is standard) the fd seems just as enjoyable as the dc5. Having Been out in both I'd have the fd.

Hi,

I currently own an EP3 and an FD2, so I will try to help!

I think the FD2 is a great car, but it is not ideal to use as an everyday car: suspension is rock solid and the car is bouncy, mirrors are not heated and rear glass does not have a wiper (in winter mornings you can't see a thing!).

Apart from that, the car is fantastic and better than the EP3 in every respect: engine revs more keenly, shorter gears means the car accelerates better, suspension is great and the car handles amazingly, and inside, despite the plastics, it is a special place to sit in, I love it.

I think the car is too quick for the road, you really need a track to enjoy it, but it is still enjoyable on the road.

In terms of insurance, the key thing is to ensure that they insure the FD2 4 door; many insurers don't know about the car and you could have problems down the line. Companies like Sky do good deals, you can find lots of info in the FD2-owners forum.

In terms of prices, FD2s are trading now in the £14,000 mark. the car has lost about £3000 in depreciation in the last 2 years.

Finally, I do live in the South East, close to Gatwick. PM me if you want and we will see if we can meet up.

I think you will love it!

I've owned all but the EK9 and NSX Type-R variants. And an S2000.

Personally, I think it's the best Type-R there is. I know and understand why the DC2 gets lauded, however, I prefer the FD2 because of the engine and high speed stability.

The FD2 has a stiffer chassis than a DC5 and not much heavier. If you research it enough, you'll find that it's a real unknown gem FWD car.

I travel 80 miles a day in mine and don't have any problems commuting in it.

I'm old so insurance isn't an issue.

With regard to value, I'm putting miles on mine so it will be a little less than some, but I don't know of anyone that is importing any from new and prices seem to be fairly static.

Have a google of fifth gear FD2 vs FN2 and you'll find the EVO COTY article online...it was 6th is 2007. The car used in both the TV programme and EVO article is actually my car.

Have you had a CL7 Euro-R? Really fancy one of those, but have no idea whatever are like to drive.

Great, thanks for that information.

Sounds a lot like what I expected.

I'm interested to see what the ride is like. People complain about the ride of the EP3 but for me it is fine on all but the most shocking roads.

Thanks, I'll PM you at some point.

Cheers for that. Cracking car history.

Interesting to hear that you do that kind of distance in it on a weekly basis.

I watched the Fifth Gear video with interest, as well as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndaUTJUEzDg which sold the FD2 for me if I'm honest.

Out of interest did Fifth gear approach you or did you acquire the car afterwards?

I've had most of the type R variants including the FD2 and I agree that it has a wonderful chassis, lots of grip, amazing turn in but the rear suspension is a massive balls up by Honda, there is not enough travel, this results in a double bounce and if you have moobs get ready for a shock... ;-) seriously I have been almost thrown out of my seat.

for this reason a lot of owners fitted the AST suspension kit as fitted to some of the litchfield examples, I went down this route however the result was that it lost a bit of the quick turn in and feedback, which imo is the magic bit of this car.

Others have opted for a koni set-up just at the back which I believe has delivered some good results. Best to test drive one.

The engine is great.
