Will this just be rubbish and should I just spend a little more on an ep3 type r or s2000?

I drove one many years ago and it didn't feel any quicker than my crx vt but always liked the styling of the prelude....

I can't post a link but it's on auto trader for 2200, 68k miles

Ive owned 4 Preludes, all 2.2 VTI's.
The best one to go for is the last of them with the red top engine. Its 200bhp instead of 183bhp in earlier UK cars.
All imports are 200BHP plus from any age but they are usually more to insure.
Performance wise they are as fast as a Integra Type R, doubt there is next to nothing in it compared to a Civic. Where the Civic will be more fun on the twisties, the 4 wheel steering at speed in a Prelude is fantastic. Only downsides are the interior's of these later cars are a bit old fashioned and lack sporty feel.
Below 30mph the rear wheels turn the opposite direction to front making parking a doddle, where as above this they turn the same way as the front.
Check for oilusage on higher milage cars, rust on rear arches and 4ws or ABS faults.
S2000 is good, but a lot of tatty examples around in the lower price range and these are at least twice the price of a very good condition Lude.

Never driven one but with 220bhp and a LSD I bet it is. Problem is they were expensive compared to UK cars and more to insure.

I drove just a standard Prelude (think the car was 14 years old at the time) 500 miles without stopping & it was probably the most pleasant driving experience in terms of reliability & comfort.

Cracking cars.

Yes I did I was into my Honda's in a big way. I had an EK9 type R, a few Preludes, Civic SIR, a couple of CRX's and Civic Jordan number 1.

You should.

Have had mine for 2 years now and have loved every minute of owning it. Mine's an H22a5 so rated at 185ish bhp, when I had a straight line race with a friend's EP3 CTR he was barely pulling away so I would suspect the H22a8 (200bhp and shorter gearing on '99+ cars) would be neck and neck in terms of pace. Handling, having driven both I prefer mine due to the better steering feel, feels a lot more solid than the CTR and more confident in the corners, plus as mentioned earlier the 4 wheel steering is brilliant, allows for very tight manoeuvres for a car of it's size. The stock brakes on the CTR are better than the Lude's, possibly due to the lower weight of the Civic but I noticed a world of difference by simply spending out on some decent discs and pads with fresh fluid.

The Civic is probably a smidge better on fuel than the Prelude but not by miles. The main selling point for me would be, how many Preludes did you see on your last road trip compared to CTRs? It's nice to have something a little different.

for the money they are pretty good - i wanted a runaround whilst i took my mx5 turbo off the road for an overhaul so have had mine for maybe 6 months now.

It had a new clean head with accord type-r cams and intake, all the belts were done, bigger ATR brakes, lightened flywheel and ATR clutch, and apexi exhaust, D2 coilovers, nice wheels etc, for 2 grand!!! biggrin

it's not exactly rip-your-face-off quick and the handling is not spectacular (tho that could be down to the D2 coilovers i have) but it's a nice drive and it's a bit marmite but i love the way they look. and zero problems so far, except 26 mpg on my commute.

just be careful of rust. and also try not to be put off by the fake wood inside... frown
the 4ws is interesting, i still can't do a parallel park, the rear of the car never seems to do what i want it to!!

IMHO the VTi will be a slightly better drive than the EP3-R. No quicker, less grippy, not as sharp at the front-end. But better feedback, better balance, better (IMHO) engine. And the 4ws gets a lot of good reports.

That said, the MkV's looks are marmite and it's a lot less practical.

S2000 I would avoid at that price-point as it'll need a fair bit of work.

Finally (and I would say this) - that price-point is prime DC2 territory - less-crashy ride than the EP3, FAR better to drive (Catchpole this month seems to rate it equal with the E30 M3), very practical, very reliable...and very desirable - looked after it'll be the easiest car to sell on again.

Just checked, and maybe not.
