Buying a used Honda Civic

Hello everyone,
I am new to this site and also to driving. So please be gentle!
We are a couple with a 4 yr old - looking to buy a car. We are likely to travel 3000 miles a year max. This is our first car. After reading through other forums and relevant websites, we decided to buy a Honda civic.
Our budget is £5k max, however we wish to spend as less as possible. Our requirements are
Having a good size car that is VERY reliable for both short and long distance travel. Decent mpg and not too expensive to maintain ( insurance, spares, road tax etc) . We plan to use this car for the next 5 yrs
We've seen some Honda civics on auto trader....ranging £3000 to £5500
Can I please ask experienced members here to help me with the following questions?
1. Given my needs, which car would you recommend? A 2003 honda civic with 70k miles for £3000 or a 2007 one with 45k miles for £5500? Both petrol.
2. Would you recommend that I buy from a Honda dealer (most expensive) or a local trader or private sale? In case of a private sale, I am planning to pay for a garage check.
3. Do you think any other car suits our needs better?
Any relevant advice gratefully accepted.
