I'm looking at buying 2000MY CR-V ES Auto (57,000 miles) and wondered if anyone can shed some light on these. I'm planning on taking a look at it this weekend. If anyone owns a CR-V of a similar age I would be grateful for any advice..... Reliability, fuel consumption, known problems etc.

Thank you.

We had one of these for while, I bought it with over 110k miles it was really good. The main problem that I was made aware off and can be nasty as it can as much to fix as the car are worth these days is the ABS system. So make sure this works.

I have a 2002 with the CVT auto - it's a decent enough piece of white goods, well thought out interior, perky engine etc. Bit thirsty and the auto box seems to like to sit at relatively high revs when cruising, it's also not very responsive and probably strangles a perfectly nice engine.

But she wanted an auto so that's what happened.

Bought a '99 CRV EX Auto at 46,000 miles. Kept it 7 years and sold it at 124,000. In that time: replaced tyres. Replaced brake pads and discs at 115,000. Never changed the plugs - they were changed at 45,000 so weren't due till 145,000 (!!!). Replaced exhaust at 95,000 Car was in use daily and for the last year was used as a "skip" for ferrying rubbish to the tip - everything from conifers, turf, windows, 2 x kitchens. Interior still looked like new. The car never once let us down and the only repair outside the ordinary was a rear diff flush to cure a squeak on a tight lock turn. Have to say out of the 30+ cars I've had in my lifetime, the '99 CRV was absolutely the best in terms of comfort, reliability, and, indeed, resale value.

Unfortunately, the new '07 onwards models aren't as good quality nside - nowhere near as good as the '99 model.

Thinking of buying one of these to replace my Pajero which has terminal gearbox problems.

What're they like? I'm thinking about '02 and it will have to be auto. (says Mrs C!) Some are temptingly cheap with a bit of mileage on them. What models & specs are available? I see some without fully colour keyed bumpers - Is that the poverty spec?

My thinking is that the CR-V looks to be the most 'grown up' of the 2 litre class 4x4. Hoping it won't be too much of a let down after the Mitsubishi!

I had bought a 2002 SE Executive for my wife a few weeks ago now. It cost us £3700, has 123k and a FHSH. There are quite a few about at this price range, but we went with the only automatic available around the Midlands area at the time.

Firstly, they are only a part time 4wd. They run as fwd most of the time, with all 4 wheels driving when the traction control detects it. You do not get any of the 4wd controls (locking diff, low ratio gears, etc) that you'd find in other 'proper' 4wd SUVs. Don't buy one if it shows signs of having been offroad-ed.

My 2002 petrol doesn't have a fuel computer display, but rough fag packet calculations suggest it's been ~28mpg, mostly on A and B roads - about the same as my S2000 smile

The owner before me had the car from new and had taken very good care of it. The engine and gear box feel solid, the ride feels very comfortable, and the leather seats in this Exec model look nearly new, with some minor wear showing on the drivers seat.

There are some cheap plastics that to show signs of wear, especially around the window/mirror controls on the drivers door. It's developed a few rattles on some journeys which appear to have fixed themselves by the next time we get in the car. The stereo seems pretty good, the sat nav is easy to use but quite out of date - we still take our TomTom when needed. I'm watching ebay for 2nd hand discs, but very few have come up, and most are either too new for the car (version 3) or are also from a 2002 vehicle.

The seats are comfortable. The visibility for driver and passages is great. They have loads of boot space, with handy cubbyholes and hooks. The rear glass screen pops open from a button on the key fob.

They are thirsty, but if that isn't an issue and you can find a tidy example with a solid service history, they seem to be a fairly good buy.
