evening all

im buying a R reg prelude tommorrow.

im sure its the blacktop engine, 2.2 VTI manual, and i just wanted a rough idea on whats the best way to go about a basic tune, i know an intake is essential but whats the best one? what are the big black intakes called?

also, what size exhaust sees best gains from this engine?

any help would be much appreciated! smile

For exhaust sizes (assuming there are off-the-shelf items on sale ready to bolt on) you will probably find they are mostly in 2.5" pipe diameter. 3" is more beneficial to turbo engines, so they say. If you are getting a system custom built the builder will be able to advise you on the best pipe diameter, but it's more than likely going to be 2.5".

also, its not going to be turbo, well, not yet anyway, maybe in the future.

2.5" is the best size then? do you know anymore on the intakes?

If we knew what your plan was it would be beneficial to anyone giving advice. What car is the engine going into? What kind of power gains are you looking for? Is it staying NA or will you want to give it forced induction?

okay, the engines going into a mk1 golf GTI.

i plan to buy the prelude as a donor car, then pretty much use what i need, engine/box and loom as a basic, fabricate my own engine mounts.

work out driveshafts/hub combo, which suspension set up, polycarb windows, full cage etc. thats the plan anyway!

im going to start a proper build thread in the readers rides section in the new year, as thats when the projects officially kicking off

i know its going to be quick enough, as its going to be a light car, but want to do some basic stuff, intake/exhaust and maybe a remap!

will be staying NA for now, turbo will be something to think about in the future.

i was hoping to use the B16B engine, but the engines alone are in excess of 2k, then id need all the bits, and i cant chop up a ek9.so i started looking at the MB civics, with the b18's but they are 6/700quid, but then i found this 'lude for a good price, and local! so ive decided to go for that, ill be selling the VTI wheels, interior, body panels etc, as these wont be needed!

If you are going the route of fabricating your own parts then you could look into cold air feed induction kits, then an induction kit like this will probably be alright:

http://www.madmotors.co.uk/japspeed-honda-prelude-...

Then, you can add silicone pipe onto the open end of the cone and route that down towards the wing of the car for cold air flow, and fabricate a heatshield to place between the engine and the air filter to prevent heat soak.

Have to say though, it seems a shame to take a Prelude and engine and put it in a Golf GTi. Personally, if I were doing a Golf GTi with a new engine, I'd get a VW VR6 engine and stick that in instead, you can get such an engine for £500, or so I was reading the other day.
